I grew up in Wilmington. I love Wilmington, but I cringe every time I have to cross the bridge into Wilmington. It used to be such a nice, quiet easy going town, but the influx of people from the north have changed it so much that it is hard to recognize any more. Had a fella say once that yankees are like hemorrhoids--they come down, but they don't go back up.

Wilmington is a great dichotomy. Some of the nicest, most polite people I know live here and are courteous on the road. Also, some of the most spiteful and angry people live here, and are easy to spot on the road. Bizzare.

Of course that drivers are bad around this area! It has become little Yankee Land! All those rich union people from the North take their HUGE taxpayer funded retirements and come down here and destroy our lifestyle! Funny how they never retire where they worked! between democrats and yankees and obuma supporters this nation is headed to the devil, very fast!

Sir(or ma'am), I think your camaflouge hat is too tight, or maybe your one tooth has an infection that has spread to your brain, but you have no control who moves here. GET OVER IT! Don't worry, you can still dine at the waffle house and there will always be a trailer park for you somewhere... Otherwise, learn to live with your neighbors from other states... oh, and by the way, just in case you didn't know, the war over! Just thought I'd let you know, you don't sound like the most educated person...

Alot of people on this post are saying people are going too fast, driving too aggressively, and rushing around like crazy. But the problem I see is quite the opposite.I have sat at a left turn waiting on the green arrow and when it does turn green, only 3 cars make it through. People just creep up slowly around that corner like they're going to flip their car at 5 mph. When the green arrow is in front of you, GO !! This is why a lot of people have to run red lights, they get so far behind from these slow people. This should prove that sometimes it's " too slow " in the South, and sometimes too hurried.

Too many Wilmington drivers don't obey the speed limit at all. ALOT of speeders with no regard for the safety of others. It's like no one else exists. It's scary. They're not afraid of tickets. (Maybe there lyes the problem...)

thats funny ! EVERYBODY thinks they are the best driver in the world and its everyone else that is a bad driver. i`ve been driving in this town for 33 years and have never had an accident or a speeding ticket. i think its the ones who complain about it are the ones we need to watch out for . just settle down , stop at stop signs and lights and stop with the finger and horns ! oh yeah and leave the damned cell phone alone while driving !!!!

When you get a green light at a stop light you can expect 2 to 4 cars to continue into the intersection from the other direction. I have watched people come up behind me in the rear view mirror and cringe because they are on phones and not paying attention. As for jumping from lane to lane, that's the norm for Ilm. I put part of the blame on the police department traffic safety. Where are they? They certainly aren't out on the roads. Also, FYI: On the weekends the roads in Dutch Square are race tracks.

This one is basic, too, and everyone learned it in driver's ed.
When you are entering a highway from an on-ramp, by the time you are in the acceleration lane you should be matching the speed of the highway traffic. FAR too many people try to get onto I-40 or the bypass (both 70 mph) while trying to merge at 55 or 60.

Wilmington drivers are the worst I've ever seen and been around. They don't follow any driving rules what so ever. They don't use turn signals, cut you off at the last minute, always on their cell phones talking or texting, run red lights, I could go on and on and on. I've never used my middle finger and horn this much in my life since moving here 3 yrs ago and I will continue to do so as long as there are idiots on the road. Peace Out

They are the worst. I have seen taxi drivers in Japan who were better. I have seen sheep herders in Nevada who were better.
Let's clear up a couple of common myths: 1. It is not about, "Them bad Yankee drivers." As a pedestrian, I have been treated with more courtesy by drivers with New York tags than North Carolina drivers. 2. It is not about women drivers. I have seen more women drivers who can paralell park better than men. Amazingly, North Carolina does not even have that on the drivers test.
It is time North Carolina quit passing out drivers licenses like donuts at a coffee shop.

People like yourself are the problem the city is facing. It used to not be this way until everyone started moving here (primarily from north of here). It would be so nice if yall would just leave to we could enjoy the nice, beautiful, SOUTHERN town that Wilmington used to be when nobody but locals/natives lived here. I-40 West/I-95 North--Use It!

you've managed to exemplify why driving here has gotten as bad as it has.
"I've never used my middle finger and horn this much in my life since moving here 3 yrs ago and I will continue to do so"
Until the opening of I-40 (circa 1990), driving here was a pleasure. After the "just moved here" crowd arrived, it's one big idiot-fest on our roads. It's as if the dumbest, least coordinated, most hostile drivers from around the nation have converged on Wilmington and they're all cutting each other off, blowing horns and using their middle fingers against each other.

Better Roads Improve Safety
One thing Wilmington and the S E part of N Car needs much needed well designed highways that allow traffic to follow.

If you don't like the way we do things go north. It won't hurt our feelings to get rid of another yankee.
Ironic
The funny thing about this poll? 90% of the 94% who say Wilmington drivers are bad, are the bad drivers of Wilmington.

drivers
I have lived in many states, and Wilmington are by far the worst drivers I have ever encountered. Even way worse then Florida.
