Air taxi serving southeast

NEW HANOVER COUNTY -- To get around Wilmington you can hail a taxi. To get around the southeast you can hail an air taxi.

Not on a jet, but it is a plane.

Sheldon Early saw how the service helped his wife and he wanted in.

Part-owner of SATSair Sheldon Early said, "Flights just kept getting cancelled and she had a mandatory meeting she had to be at on Monday morning. I called the guys over there at SATSair and I got her an airplane and an hour later she was in Nashville she called me and said I don't know what you have to do, but we have to get involved in this business somehow."

SATS has been off the ground for two years and the company is taking off. They started with two planes. By the end of this year they'll have more than 50.

The size of the cabin is about the size of an SUV. You have XM radio and you can even have your food catered to you, but that's not all.

Judd Arnold uses SATSair often. He said, "The convenience of it compared to commercial is incredible. We just come in we park we walk through the doors, we give the pilots our bags, jump in the plane and within minutes we're in the air."

But these amenities don't come cheap. The cost is $420 an hour.

Bob Scarpema said he wouldn't use an air taxi.

"The negatives would be the price. It's just not competitive at this point," Scarpema said.

But for those who are willing to pay the price, they get customized concierge service.

"One of my partners normally has some food and a bottle of wine waiting on him when he gets here, but I just enjoy getting up and flying with them. You get a view that you don't get with a commercial plane," Early said.

The service can save a lot of time: an hour flight on the air taxi instead of a four hour trip on the ground.

SATS offers its service across the southeast.
