Blackwater inquiry turns to Baghdad

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Federal authorities investigating contractors working for North Carolina-based Blackwater Worldwide are returning to Iraq in the investigation of a deadly September shooting that killed 17 Iraqi civilians.

The investigation has been limited by the government's initial promise of immunity for bodyguards working for Moyock-based Blackwater who gave statements about the shootings.

The shooting at a Baghdad intersection has strained diplomatic relations and raised questions over whether some contractors can operate without legal consequences.

Eight prosecutors and FBI agents left Tuesday night for Iraq, where they plan to interview witnesses and gather evidence from the shooting.

Prosecutors have questioned about 30 U.S. witnesses, including Blackwater security guards and managers.
