Remembering Coretta Scott King

Coretta Scott King died just over two years ago, but her legacy lives on. As we continue to celebrate black history month, we take a look back at the first lady of the civil rights movement.

Coretta Scott was born into segregated, rural Alabama in 1927. After higher education up north, she married Martin Luther King Jr. then moved back to Alabama in 1954, as the civil rights movement gained momentum.

While raising four children, Mrs. King organized sit-ins and Marches and performed in "freedom concerts."

After her husband was assassinated in 1968 Coretta devoted herself to maintaining his legacy. At her funeral in 2006 the living legends of the civil rights movement paid tribute, along with many of those who have benefited since.
