Lightning is the second severe weather killer in the country, killing almost 100 people each year. It also injures over 500 people each year and causes several hundred million dollars in damage. These statistics are proof of just how dangerous lightning can be!!

Lightning is the discharge of electrical energy in a thunderstorm, between thunderstorms, and between a thunderstorm and the ground. It, along with thunder, occurs in all thunderstorms. Most of the casualties occur in the summertime in the afternoon and early evening. So how can you stay safe? If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. So follow these tips!!

1. Seek shelter immediately in a building or car.

2. If you are in a boat or in the water, get to shore ASAP! Then find shelter.

3. If you are outdoors with no nearby shelter, find a low spot away from trees, fences, and poles. Squat low to the ground and minimize your contact with the ground.

3. Avoid using electrical appliances and corded telephones.

**To be safe, wait at least 30 minutes after you last hear thunder before heading back outdoors.**

I'll have more tomorrow on flood safety...stay tuned!!
