There's Nothing Like Live TV

Imagine if when you went to work every day, thousands of people were watching, there to see each and every painful mistake you make. Imagine some of them mocked you behind your back, enjoying a good laugh with friends at your expense. Imagine some of them called or e-mailed you or even worse, your boss, to let you know how you screwed up or to let you know that they don't like you or the job you do.

Welcome to life on TV.

I'm not complaining. Those of us in this business know what we're getting into. Those who don't typically won't last very long with thin skin. But knowing what may be ahead does not exactly make it easy.

Take this morning, for example. It started like most other days. We all did our pre-show work, got out to the set in time. Everything was ready to go and the show started. And then we realized the audio from our studio was not making it to your home. That's a problem. For the next hour and 40 minutes, we could do nothing. We tried different things, but mostly could only sit and wait till those who know how showed up to fix things. We did manage to get on air for about eight or nine minutes just before turning things over to Good Morning America at 7 a.m.

First of all, on behalf of all of us who work on Good Morning Carolina, we apologize for the problem. We know many of you count on us to help get you up in the morning with updates on news and weather. And when we're not there, that can affect your day. I took a call from one loyal viewer who told me she is legally blind and wakes up with us every day. When she heard the voice of ABC's Hari Srenavasan this morning, she knew something was wrong and had to get a relative to confirm her worries.

Live television can be both exhilarating and frustrating. The technology that allows us to bring the events of the world directly into your home can also leave us looking like fools as it did today. It is one thing to have a bad day. It is another thing to have an outside influence cause you to have a bad day.

Again, we apologize for what happened today. We hope it'll be fixed so it never happens again. We hope each day you're able to wake up to the information you need to get you ready for the day ahead.
