RALEIGH (AP) -- Thunderstorms moving across the state are expected to strengthen and bring strong winds following weekend storms that dumped up to a half-foot of rain.
The National Weather Service said Monday several thunderstorms are expected to develop ahead of a strong cold front moving in from the west.
Forecasters said the storms will increase in coverage and intensity as they move from the Winston-Salem area to the coast Monday afternoon. Strong winds are expected.
The weather service reported up to 6 inches of rainfall over the weekend in some areas north of Charlotte, near Albemarle and New Bern. Officials reported penny-sized hail coming from a severe thunderstorm near Wendell.
Radar indicated a tornado over Bailey late Sunday. No damage was reported.
