School officials are now saying that the Kenan School of Engineering will be open next year, but will adopt a different model and only be available to certain students.
Effective next year, the Kenan School of Engineering will merge with neighboring James Kenan High School.
Reginald Kenan has been on the Duplin County School Board since 1989. He says stem schools like Kenan School of Engineering take a different, hands on approach to learning, and the point of them is to help improve low performance schools.
"So none of the resources that we provide to the stem school at this point go to James Kenan High School. Judge Manning feels that that should not be. The resources must be spent on the low performing students," said Kenan.
The Kenan School of Engineering will only be open to students in the Kenan High School District.
Right now the school has 90 students, most of whom commute from other districts.
