CHARLOTTE (AP) -- North Carolina freshman senator Richard Burr says he's supporting the presidential bid of Republican Senator John McCain.

Burr, who joined McCain in Charlotte today, called the Arizona senator "a proven leader and a true American hero."

Burr, a Republican, has served in the Senate alongside McCain since 2004. He cited McCain's support of the military and his record of fiscal discipline as factors in his decision to support McCain.
