WILMINGTON -- Local elementary students promoted literacy, learning and love today.
A third grade class at Wilmington's Winter Park Elementary school donated books for mothers and children in the pediatric unit at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Tara Mulvey's class spent days sewing and creating what they call "handmade literacy bags."
The kids filled them with books, lunch passes and hand written cards.
Third grader Nick Sander said, "Well we made them and put books in them so other people in the hospital, like new born babies, could read and kids that have been hurt."
The students donated more than 20 literacy bags to the hospital.
In return, the hospital gave each child a bag containing first aid and medical information.
