Man accused of shooting wife in Ocean Isle Beach

OCEAN ISLE BEACH -- A Charlotte woman is dead after deputies say she was shot by her husband. It happened at the couple's vacation home in Ocean Isle Beach. Now the husband is facing charges for her death and other charges related to things detectives learned during the investigation. The shooting took place around one o'clock Sunday morning in the quiet community of Lakewood Estates. Sixty-five-year-old Robert Kaufman is charged with involuntary manslaughter. Deputies say Kaufman shot his wife Marie on the deck of their vacation home in Ocean Isle. When deputies arrived Marie was already dead. Brandon Tharpe was in one of the neighboring houses. He said, "[I] heard a couple of big bangs, then some guns shots went off, then we heard screaming and yelling… We thought it was an accident, that's what it sounded like." That's also what it sounds like from the 911 call. Since Kaufman's arrest Sunday deputies have also charged him with six counts of first degree sex offenses with a child and six counts of sex offenses by a parental role. Deputies say those charges are not related to the shooting. They will not say where the charges stem from. The investigation is ongoing. Kaufman is in the Brunswick County jail under $200,000 bond.
