Three-year-old dies after being struck by car

WILMINGTON -- A three-year-old girl has died after being struck by a car in Wilmington. It happened at the intersection of 16th and Greenfield Streets Monday afternoon. Police say the victim and her mother were trying to cross the busy intersection of South 16th Street and Greenfield Street when they were hit by a car. Police are busy reconstructing the accident scene. At this time, they say the impact caused the mother and daughter to fly one hundred feet before they landed. Three-year-old Asani McEachin died early Tuesday morning from her injuries. Her mother, Rachel Matthews, is in New Hanover Regional Medical Center in critical condition. Doug Brinson, Asani's uncle, says he passed by the scene shortly after it happened. "I didn't know my family was involved in it. I had no idea one of my family members was the one who got hit and killed," Brinson said. Brinson and other family members are devastated by their loss. Eighteen-year-old Megan Teachey was driving the car that hit the little girl and her mom. Police initially said Teachy had a green light. Brinson says she should be held accountable. "Whatever the prosecution is going to do, whether it be take your license for a week or a month, they ought to face some kind of prosecution for taking a life," Brinson said. No charges have been filed yet. Police are still interviewing witnesses and reviewing all of the evidence before a final decision is made. Authorities spent about an hour Tuesday reconstructing the scene. Police say it could take a week to finish their investigation.
