Brush fire fear prompts fireworks ban on Hatteras

READ MORE:

MANTEO, N.C. (AP) -- Beginning June 1, people living on Hatteras Island can't buy or set off fireworks.

The fear of brushfires prompted Dare County commissioners to issue the ban.

Residents of the island in southern Dare County had asked the commissioners to ban fireworks because they were concerned about fires on the isolated island that has limited firefighting resources.

The board allowed special permits for certain public or private fireworks displays. Violation of the ban will be a misdemeanor.
