NOVEMBER: IT'S NOT ALWAYS WHAT YOU THINK...
Submitted by Guest on Wed, 11/14/2007 - 9:18am.
November weather is usually quiet in southeastern NC. The average monthly rainfall is only about 3 inches, and November is the third least-active month for thunderstorm development. Highs are usually in the 60's and 70's this time of year, so snow is usually out of the question as well. As a general rule, November is usually quite pleasant- but every rule has an exception. November 2007 marks the one-year anniversary of the deadliest November tornado in the history of Columbus County. On November 16, 2006 an F3 tornado (winds approaching 200 mph) leveled homes in the small community of Riegelwood. The storm developed early in the day, as many folks were waking-up to begin their morning routines. The tornado claimed 8 lives just days before Thanksgiving. The Rieglwood storm was unique in terms of path and intensity, but it wasn't the only November tornado to effect our state. On November 7, 1995, an outbreak of tornadoes ripped through South Carolina, eventually affecting Columbus County, North Carolina. Estimated storm winds approached 130 mph, producing widespread damage and numerous injuries. Of course, probably the best known November tornado sighting took place in the Triangle Area. On November 28, 1988, a devastating F4 tornado (with winds over 220 mph) traveled on a path straight through the heart of Raleigh, killing 4 and producing $77 million in property damage. While these events are rare, we are occasionally reminded that severe weather can happen nearly anywhere, anytime... (Comments? Send Jerry an email at jjackson@wwaytv3.com). By: » |
