Oak Island being fought for new annexation

Residents along Long Beach Road have taken steps to fight annexation by the neighboring town of Oak Island. Nearly 400 people have signed a petition asking the court to stop the annexation attempt. The petition was filed almost two weeks ago in Brunswick County court. The petition claims the town did not adopt the annexation ordinance properly. Long Beach Road area is one of two areas Oak Island is trying to annex. The other is the Oakwood Glen subdivision, which hasn't filed anything yet.

Why can't Oak Island just worry about their side of the bridge? Long Beach Road isn't even on the island. Whoever heard of an island owning property on the mainland? That would be like Bald Head Island annexing Southport, and Southport becoming Bald Head Island. Just doesn't make sense. I know it all comes down to Oak Island getting more money from the taxpayers. But if the folks wanted to live on the island and pay their tax rates, they would have moved to the island in the first place. On the OTHER side of the bridge.
