WWAY has more details Friday in the deadly construction accident on the new Oak Island Bridge. New video released today may hold the answers to how a concrete girder fell, killing Jose Montalvo. A town official happened to be filming a documentary on the bridge construction when the beam broke loose. Now, a number of agencies are looking to the video for clues as to what went wrong. This video may help investigators learn why a concrete girder fell during construction of the new bridge. Jose Montalvo was killed in the accident and Ricky Bryant of Supply was critically injured. Kyle Thomas, Oak Island Spokesman said, "The sound sounded abnormal for any kind of construction situation and immediately I just yelled out, just out of instinct I think." Thomas was behind the lens of the camera shooting video for a documentary. Oak Island Mayor Johnie Vereen said, "I think this was surely by error that this happened, this man was tied to this beam just as he should be. But it's like a safety belt, most of the time they save your life and every once in a while, it costs you your life. There is no perfect situation for safety and I don't think that was the case here." The video has been handed over to the North Carolina Department of Labor, the Department of Transportation, and the Oak Island Police Department. It will be a key element in closing the investigation. A representative from the department of labor told WWAYTV3 this investigation could take weeks or even months to find out what happened and whether safety practices were violated. Jose Montalvo is survived by his wife and three children. Ricky Bryant suffered leg injuries. The town has established the Oak Island Bridge accident fund for the families of the men involved.
