Ten years ago Yaupon Beach combined with Long Beach in order to form the town of Oak Island. Congressman Mike McIntyre helped the town celebrate its ten-year anniversary Wednesday afternoon with a flag raising ceremony at the new South Harbour Fire Station. The newly designed Oak Island town flag was revealed for the first time. It will fly below the American & state flag. Mayor Johnie Vereen explained the significance. “Congressman is so gracious to give us flags that flew over the capitol. We'll have brand new American flags to fly over all of our governmental facilities here at Oak Island. Also we're fortunate to have our state representative do the same thing. So we'll have brand new state flags. All these flew over the national capitol and our state capitol.” Congressman McIntyre presented a check to the town of Oak Island for $847,000. Most of the federal funding will go to the Oak Island Fire Department and the remaining portion will be used by the Oak Island Police Department.
