Oak Island moves closer to buying Yaupon Pier

The Oak Island Town Council has taken another step towards the purchase of the Yaupon Peir. By a vote of three to two last night, the council accepted a $300,000 state grant to help with the $1.5 million purchase of the pier. The grant requires the town to match twenty-five percent. This grant will be added to a $500,000 grant already approved by the town. The pier needs about $200,000 in repairs. Mayor Johnie Vereen says the town still has pending grant applications he hopes will cover the additional costs.

Good For Oak Island

Glad to see that the Town of Oak Island made a positive decision last night to continue to purchase the pier. It would be a tragic thing to see the pier disappear from what is considered as a good family beach. It has stood for a long time and provided many thousands of people with the pleasure and joy of fishing that is disappearing so rapidly from our wonderful coast. Continue on OI and let's get the pier bought for future generations.
