The Oak Island Pier, formerly known as Yaupon Pier is back in business. After a two-year hiatus, the Oak Island Pier is open again and Monday's rain didn't stop fisherman from re-claiming their spots on the pier. "Coming back today was like a family reunion; you saw people that you hadn't seen in a long time, since it closed in ' 07,” said fisherman Luther Dishman. After the pier went into foreclosure, the fishermen who made the pier their second home all went their separate ways. Now it's called Oak Island Pier, and it's officially back in business. The town of Oak Island is leasing the pier until it can secure financing to buy it. The pier is run by former Long Beach Pier owner Tommy Thomes, who is looking forward to his new business living a long and fruitful life. “There were people standing in line around 5:00 this morning, so yes I am surprised, and I’m surprised at the volume we've had today,” Thomes said. The pier is almost fully repaired, minus a few details like replacing a few boards, and other cosmetic fixes, but veteran fisherman don't fish off this pier for it's looks. "It's more like a brotherhood, and that's what we are all here for, and the occasional fish you catch,” said Jeremy Carter. It costs about $ 9.00 to take two rods out and fish off the pier. There will be a grand opening for the new Oak Island Pier this Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
