Oak Island Town Council meeting to discuss Yaupon Pier

Friday the Oak Island Town Council will meet in closed session to discuss the $1.7 million purchase of the Yaupon Pier. The town is in the process of purchasing the fishing pier, which closed after going into foreclosure more than a year ago. The town needs approval from the local government commission to finance the project. Repairs to the pier will cost around $200,000, while the pier itself costs $1.5 million. The town has a $500,000 state matching grant and plans to finance the rest. Officials hope to pay the loan off with more grant money.

Pier Purchase

The Town of Oak Island should be given a round of applause for looking at buying the pier to preserve it. In these tight economic times, it just makes sense to keep something in Yaupon for people to use when they travel to the area. Times are going to get tighter and this will give families something to do together that many can enjoy for years to come( with the exception of a hurricane's appetite). Fishing is one of the last few family things that many people do. It is very tragic that many families today cannot do something like this together when the young people would rather play video games or text their friends instead of being in the outside and enjoying the wonderful world that has been created for our use. Keep the pier and let us enjoy it for years to come. Look at yearly passes and permits to raise funds and keep the costs low
