Oak Island town leaders want your thoughts on the purchase of the Yaupon Pier. The Town of Oak Island wants to buy the pier for $1.7 million. So far, they have $800,000 in grants. The town received bids for financing the rest. One bank is offering a ten-year loan for $900,000 at a 4.39 percent interest rate. If you want to comment on financing the purchase of the pier, the meeting will be at the Oak Island Recreation Center on East Oak Island Drive at 6:00 p.m.

yaupon pier

i think it is one of the best envestments the island has made for the island land owners and the tourest trade in the last two decades. i am still UP SET because they didn't save the longest pier in N.C. (long beach fishing pier). the next thing the town of long beach should do is to keep the big fishing boats at least 1 mile off shore, and if cought any closer than that fine them 1,000 dollers 2nd. time 2,ooo 3rd. time3,000. if you don't stop that then buying the yaupon pier was a waste of time and money, unless all of this is just for show and you have other reasons for buying the property.

Yaupon Pier

I agree with William. With only one fishing pier on Oak Island, that being Ocean Crest, there is not enough room to handle all the fishermen, fisherladies, on that one pier. If the pier is lost so will be most of the Yaupon area due to the layout of the houses. I realy think a survey should be made on how much income is brought in from fishing on the island in the past years. I really think if the pier is run by good knowledgable business people, the pier should be able to take care of itself.

If we lose the Yaupon Pier

If we lose the Yaupon Pier we will be losing much more than Wood and nails. We will be losing a piece of our Heritage and a piece of our life. It's a bad thing to see so many things that were enjoyed as a part of our youthful lives here in Oak Island being reduced to rubble and Memories. Sometime what we get in the name of progress is not worth the price we pay. People choose to relocate here and then begin to try and change our way of life and our way of doing things until soon, the very things that inspired people to come here are gone. Some of us are not imports but have been here our entire lives. The Yaupon pier and all of the activities surrounding it was a right of passage between childhood and adulthood for a lot of us and we cannot allow our birthright to be taken away by developers and greed. There are some things in this world that are worth more than money and in a community like Oak Island the pier is one of them. We have already seen too many places and things reduced to rubble and memories, and at some point of time Enough is Enough!

yaupon pier !!!

those piers that are left on oak island nc will always be one of the best things their!! i hope it goes father and laws are passed to keep them their forever and few if any others have fishing like these piers do!!! how many places are their in the world left where you can walk out over the ocean !!!

Who's going to make the payments???????????????

Who do all of these people think are going to make these payments. I have lived here and worked here for thirty years. Taxes and insurance are more than our house payments were. This will be another tax burden for those of us who would like to stay here after we retire. If this is such a great investment why is it still for sell. Maybe the price is a little steep.

No pier

I believe the town needs to keep the money in the bank during this recession. With the sewer project already well over budget, this is not the right time to keep spending. The pier has much needed repair and will be over budget also. The town officials have not looked into the cons of buying the pier.

Yaupon Save It

Why Would You Want It Closed ? With Times Like They Are Now Every Little Bit Helps It Brings People With Money To Our Area, To Shop Stay In Your Condos ,Hotels, Restaurants Etc. It Would Give Some A Better Chance To Fish I For One Know I Tried Several Times Last Year To Get On Ocean Crest But Their Was No Where To Park And The Pier Was Full So I Just Went Home I Ask You Please Dont Close Yaupon I miss All The Local People Their

Please don't close it?

It's already closed...obviously you'll miss it dearly. It's a run-down pile of junk...if anything, they should build a new concrete pier.

Yaupon Pier

Ah the memories I have of that pier. When I lived there as a child it was great ! Most of the roads on the island were still dirt ! Call it nostalgia but I would like for them to save it especially after what they did to Long Beach Pier.

Save the pier

Do it. Do it now! I can't understand why anyone would want to see our coastal piers gone. It is a part of our history. Our grandparents fished there and I hope our future grandchildren get to fish there.

PIER

IT IS SAD THAT THE PIER CLOSED- ALOT OF FOLKS (OLDER REALLY ENJOYED FISHING OFF OF IT-ESPECIALLY SINCE THEY HAVE A HARD TIME DRAGGING ALL THEIR GEAR ACROSS THE SAND.) ALSO, LOOK AT THE REVENUE WHICH HAS BEEN LOST AT MOTELS, REST, GIFT SHOPS ECT. SINCE THE CLOSING. IF THE TOWN CAN'T SWING IT, I SURE WISH I WOULD WIN THE LOTTERY AND I WOULD BUY IT.(YEAH, LIKE THAT COULD HAPPEN) ANYWAY, HOPE SOMEONE TAKES OVER SOON AND IT WILL BRING BACK MEMORIES, AND ALSO CREATE FUTURE MEMORIES FOR MANY.(YOUNG & OLD) KEEP ON FISHING!!!!

Agreed! Keep the pier for the rest of us!

Its a great idea to keep it open for recreation! I spent my youth at the beach and going to the pier was a tradition. In recent years it has become harder to get access to the water unless you have pockets full of money! The bunch of Nit Wits in recent years at Wrightsville and even Carolina Beach make it a pain to come to the shore and try to nickle and dime in the process. Even with all the fancy schmancy places to eat there is nothing better than catching your dinner, then taking it home to fry up. Good place to spend time with your kids and teach life lessons too!
