Obama campaign opens Wilmington headquarters

READ MORE:
The 2008 presidential campaign has come to town. The Obama campaign opened its Wilmington headquarters Saturdya at the corner of South 39th Street and Park Avenue. Supporters of the Democratic presidential nominee stopped by to sign up for volunteer opportunities. On the Republican side, there still aren't any McCain headquarters here. A spokesman from the McCain campaign says the Arizona Senator already has a strong presence in North Carolina and the campaign will be announcing new headquarter openings soon.

Gas Taxes

When I moved here in '98, NC had the lowest gas tax in the nation. That's when we had Faircloth & other Republicans running this state & they kept spending & taxes WAY down. That's why the South is booming. It ain't just the weather that makes the South desirable!!! Well lo'& behold the Northerners w/ their Democratic mindset migrated here & voted in Democrats. NOW we're one of the states w/ the HIGHEST gas taxes. Wake up people & remember why you came here. My family is from Western-Buffalo NY area & we left there as Republicans cuz we knew how the Dems & their wild spending ruined the economny & how that spending raised taxes on ALL levels of Gov't i.e. city, school, county & State. Now it's happening here. Wake up voters!!!!

Unfortunately, a lot of them don't see it

Arlene, for every one of us who grew up in New York or New Jersey and saw a society totally destroyed by the Democrats, there is someone else who wants to recreate the nightmare that is the Northeast, right here. Read these boards regularly, and it will amaze you. Some want to create WAVE in the NYC MTA image, saddling taxpayers with supporting a bottomless black-hole for money that will never be self-supporting. Some advocate an all powerful combined county-city government, as you see in the five counties of NYC. Still others want unions to gain power and do away with the right-to-work law.... ...and there is no limit to those who will vote for any bond referendum or tax increase because they have that Northeast mentality that subconsciously thinks, "The government can spend my money wiser than I can. They will take care of me." For some reason, after a few years away from that hell-hole, they start to view it as Parsdise Lost. Unfortunately, it's not only the Northeast (or here) that's plagued with fans of Big Nanny Government. That was evident in that spectacle of Socialism last week in Denver. Democracy only works as long as 51% of the voters are intelligent, productive members of society. When the "societal panhandlers" and their sympathizers gain the majority, economic collapse is at hand.

Government

I'll put it this way, "Government: If you think the problems we cause are bad, just wait till you see our solutions." I think that just about does it.

YEEEE HAAAAA The Lone Ranger Rides Again!!!!!!!

Yeee HAAA!!! The Lone Ranger rides Again!!!!!

Let's try no to be nieve

Let's try no to be nieve about the tax situation. Dems and Repubs a like have always known this war would have to be paid for and we all know who has to pay for it. Debts the government encounters has to be paid just like mine and your debts. Unless you know someting I don't the good fairy has never come along and swooped my debts away. People should have known all along reckoning day would come and taxes would have to be increased to pay the country's debts.

Obama doesn't care about the national debt

He wants to raise taxes to fund our next great black-hole for money, universal health care. Here's an idea - instead of raising taxes, why don't we cut spending? No....no....that's impossible, right?

one great way of cutting

one great way of cutting spending would be leaving Iraq.

I agree 100%

But regardless of Bush's military incompetence, we're there and you simply can't turn around to leave. That's especially true when you consider the strategic importance of the Straits of Hormuz to the global petroleum markets. We cannot afford turmoil in that region. We also need to capitalize on the fact that we have a working relationship (albeit not ideal) with a nation that is not only strategically important because of geography, but sits atop almost thirty-percent of the world's know oil reserves. The idea of forward deployment has been a cornerstone of our national defense policy since 1945 because it has worked. Instead of running from Iraq, we need to explore the feasibility of permanent bases, just as we built in Korea, Japan, and Europe to ring the Soviet Empire. The problem is now Iran, and if World War III is going to break out, it's better to fight it over there than here.

Obama wants to cut back tax

Obama wants to cut back tax breaks for corporations so the middle class and and poor don't hold the burden. it annoys me that some networks strategically cut sound bites out of his full explainations on how we are gonna pay our monstrous debt-the brunt of which we owe to China

The poor DON'T hold the burden

Straight from the IRS in July of 2008 - for tax year 2006, the top 50% of all Americans pay 97.01% of all personal income taxes. The bottom 50% pay a mere 2.99%. Do the poor and middle class have ANY obligation to support this country? As far as treating corporations more harshly, who do you think is going to hire you? Some big, mean, evil corporation....or Barack Obama? Let's take but one corporation Comrade Obama hates, ExxonMobil. He has proudly proclaimed how he will take away any tax break and sock them with a windfall profits tax. After all, they made $70.5 billion dollars last year! Oh, but wait....that was PRE-tax income. Here's what Obama and the main-stream media won't tell you - they also paid $29.9 billion in taxes, reducing their net income to $40 billion. Nearly $30 billion in taxes. That's 42% of their pre-tax income. Meanwhile, the "poor and middle class" are paying only 3% of the personal income taxes collected? The problem obviously ISN'T corporate tax rates. The problem is a majority of the country not paying taxes, with a sizeable portion of that number soaking up benefits that are sucking the system dry. Trust me, neither those evil wealthy people nor big corporations are having more babies to put on Medicaid, increase their food vouchers, or get more WIC coupons. Forty-seven years after John F. Kennedy made his famous inaugural speech, in which he intoned, "Ask not what your country can do for you...." Barack Obama is buying votes by promising an economic policy based entirely upon wealth redistribution. God save this nation!

Uncle Reality = Commonsensenottoo...

I've heard this spew before. Do a google and everyone who has a left or right political agenda has conflicting data. Bottom line: Those in the middle and upper classes are being soaked. Here's some more data by the IRS: Who Pays Income Taxes? See Who Pays What For Tax Year 2006 Percentiles Ranked by AGI AGI Threshold on Percentiles Percentage of Federal Personal Income Tax Paid Top 1% $388,806 39.89 Top 5% $153,542 60.14 Top 10% $108,904 70.79 Top 25% $64,702 86.27 Top 50% $31,987 97.01 Bottom 50% <$31,987 2.99 Note: AGI is Adjusted Gross Income Source: Internal Revenue Service

What odd behavior

You refer to my post as "spew," yet post the exact same figure that I did: The top 50% pay 97.01% of all personal income taxes. Are you off your meds?

Guest 3 that is incorrect

Guest 3... All of your stats are incorrect and made up.. Just saying.

Sources

You might wqant to re-check your sources again or are they just incorrect and made up?

I could care less who opens

I could care less who opens a head quarters wherever. I believe all the people who vote this time are going to vote for what is best for them. Oh yes, we all love our country, but most people r sick of suffering and sacrificing. You can only carry the cause of sacrifice for so many years and people get sick. They will vote for what is best for them this time.

Wait a minute!

Just wait a little bit before announcing the address for the location of the headquarters. The Obama campaign people might change their minds a few times on where to locate it. Don't be so fast, wait a minute.

Obama's New Headquarters

Where is 39th and Park Ave? I've been living in Wilmington for almost 3 years and I know it's not anywhere that I've passed. Or maybe I have and don't remember. Could someone please tell me what it's near? Thank you.

haha, im with you. Ive lived

haha, im with you. Ive lived here 30 years and have never heard of park avenue and 39th. (incidentally, ive never heard of punctuation or proper sentence structure either.)

I see

39th runs parallel between Floral Pky and Audubon Blvd. Park runs parallel to Oleander Dr.

Time to wake up

Maybe it is time to wake up????? I don't have a problem with Obama being black and running for President. I am happy that our country has gotten to a point in our history that a black man is running for President. I don't know him personally, so I can only judge his character by the company he keeps. There is Jim Johnson involvement with Countrywide Financial Corp, Eric Holder 2nd man in Clinton's Justice Department who pardon financier Marc Rich, Rev. Jeremiah Wright pastor of Obama's church for 20 years and Rev. Michael Pleger racist comments, Tony Rezko convicted of money laundering, and Bill Ayers former Weather Underground terrorist member. So even if I over look the character of his associates and concentrate just on his political views, I would still have questions about his ability to lead this country for the good of all the people. With the media pushing their agenda of Obama for President onto the American people with their one sided reporting how can the American people make up their minds at the voting booths.... who to vote for? Simple, push the eloquent speeches of Obama aside and compare candiates on the issues. Take the one issue that greatly separates the candiates, taxes. The one issue that hits us hard immediately. INTERESTING DATA RECEIVED ON TAXES This is something you should be aware of so you don't get blind-sided. This is really going to catch a lot of families off guard. It should make you worry. Proposed changes in taxes after 2008 General election: CAPITAL GAINS TAX MCCAIN 0% on home sales up to $500,000 per home (couples) McCain does not propose any change in existing home sales income tax. OBAMA 28% on profit from ALL home sales How does this affect you? If you sell your home and make a profit, you will pay 28% of your gain on taxes. If you are heading toward retirement and would like to down-size your home or move into a retirement community, 28% of the money you make from your home will go to taxes. This proposal will adversely affect the elderly who are counting on the income from their homes as part of their retirement income. DIVIDEND TAX MCCAIN 15% (no change) OBAMA 39.6% How will this affect you? If you have any money invested in the stock market, IRA, mutual funds, college funds, life insurance, retirement accounts,or anything that pays or reinvests dividends, you will now be paying nearly 40% of the money earned on taxes if Obama becomes president. The experts predict that higher tax rates on dividends and capital gains would crash the stock market yet do absolutely nothing to cut the deficit. INCOME TAX MCCAIN (no changes) Single making 30K - tax $4,500 Single making 50K - tax $12,500 Single making 75K - tax $18,750 Married making 60K- tax $9,000 Married making 75K - tax $18,750 Married making 125K - tax $31,250 OBAMA (reversion to pre-Bush tax cuts) Single making 30K - tax $8,400 Single making 50K - tax $14,000 Single making 75K - tax $23,250 Married making 60K - tax $16,800 Married making 75K - tax $21,000 Married making 125K - tax $38,750 Under Obama your taxes will more than double! How does this affect you? No explanation needed. This is pretty straight forward. INHERITANCE TAX MCCAIN 0% (No change, Bush repealed this tax) OBAMA Restore the inheritance tax How does this affect you? Many families have lost businesses, farms and ranches, and homes that have been in their families for generations because they could not afford the inheritance tax. Those willing their assets to loved ones will onlylose them to these taxes. NEW TAXES BEING PROPOSED BY OBAMA * New government taxes proposed on homes that are more than 2400 square feet * New gasoline taxes (as if gas weren't high enough already) * New taxes on natural resources consumption (heating gas, water, electricity) * New taxes on retirement accounts and last but not least.... * New taxes to pay for socialized medicine so we can receive the same level of medical care as other third-world countries!!! Fact, it has not worked in Canada! Voting is a privilege every citizen should do. So don't just reveal in Obama's eloquent speeches of change. Listen to what Obama says in his eloquent speeches about what he says he will do just in taxes, can you afford for him to be President??? Is this the change you are prepared to vote for? Don't take my word for it, go to his web site and read his proposals for your self. There may be people that can afford more taxes, I am not one of them. I doubt that the majority of American citizens can. So, just on this one issue alone, I cannot vote for Obama. If we allow a majority Democratic congress and President to rule for the next 4 years, you will definitely get change...change from your paychecks, because it is said by the experts that over 54% of your check will be taxed by the Federal Government, that's before state tax is even considered. So at the voting booth, remember this, when ever a politician says he is going to raise taxes, you can take that promise to the bank...and draw out your change left over after taxes.

Completly false

These are completely false! ie lies ie bearing false witness. http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/taxes.asp Thats a sin... see bible 10 comandments. On a side note. no matter who gets elected has to figure out how to pay for the war.

It's Time to Be Truthful

This is a well circulated urban legend that is false. See: http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/taxes.asp

Time for you to stop being gullible

Obama might like us to BELIEVE that he only wants to raise taxes on those who make $250k or more, but on 14 March he voted for a resolution that calls for a 3% tax increase on the 25, 28, and 31% tax brackets. That means that an individual with an AGI as low as $31,850 will see his or her taxes rise. Obama is a Democrat. None of them have ever met a tax they didn't LOVE!

Re: Time for you to stop being gullible

I totally understand Democratic as well as Republician agenda. I don't like either. The previous poster had thrown out a total lie. From my view point, it only makes Republicians look bad. Why do you wish to defend a lier? I thought you had common sense?

Who is defending him?

I'm simply stating that while his numbers may have been over the top, Obama IS going to raise taxes on people making a LOT less than $250k. The "naive" comment was about you believing a website that was just as inaccurate as the original poster.

Re: Who is defending him?

So tell me please, where do you get your facts? And where has Snopes misled? Snopes simply states what Obama has said he would do. Facts are, no one knows what either candidate will do. We only know what has been said, factored in with past performance. Neither candidate has done well in this arena, in my opinion. Scare tactics are for fools, don't you agree? Or should we all be sheep and nod our head to what Guest3 spewed?

Don't go by what he SAYS he'll do

Go by his voting record. Look at his votes on 13 and 14 March of this year. When he tells you that he's only going to raise taxes on those making more than $250k, but then votes to raise taxes on those with an AGI of $31,850 (which is a gross of about $43k), then you know that he's lying to you. I don't like the guy BECAUSE of what he "says" he'll do. Windfall profits? Is this suddenly Russia? We seize money because we can? Who does he think those oil company profits go to? They go to the millions of Americans who hold mutual funds, 401ks, IRAs and pension funds that own the oil companies' stocks. We tried windfall profits once before and it cut revenues to the treasury! Ditto for capital gains taxes. Did you watch the interview where Obama was challenged about raising capital gains taxes, and the interviewer (who had all his ducks in a row, and knew the facts) pointed out that every time capital gains taxes are raised, revenue is reduced? Obama grew irritated and flustered immediately, and mumbled something about "just wanting to be fair." (?) Trust me, I'm no big fan of McCain, but Obama is nothing more than the latest in a parade of left wing Socialists the Democrats insist on nominating. 2000, 2004, and now again in 2008, they send us someone slightly left of Lenin, then claim they "didn't get their message out" when he loses. But they DO get their message out. They just can't understand that their message stinks! Functional, responsible, productive members of society are not going to vote for a guy who wants to take their money and use it to prop up the Democrat's little niche groups of losers: Saps, simpletons, sc**bags and Socialists. No one else could support the modern Democratic Party. I'll take Republican incompetence over Democratic incomptence with add-on wealth redistribution, ANY day! BTW, to get my facts I check voting records. If you want to know the candidate, check their voting history. Research McCain's and you will be bored: Ho-hum. Read Obama'a and you will be truly frightened!

RE: Time to Wake Up

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but it seems as though you promote McCain's proposals that appear to remain the same as Bush. You've denote "no change" for most of McCain's responses to taxes, so I assume McCain (and you, of course) feel that the tax policies are effective. Again, this is the first I've seen of this data. However, it appears that most of the tax increases proposed by Obama are directed towards those that are wealthy enough to afford to leave significant assets to love ones, and are therefore the recipients subjected to an inheritance tax. Most of the working class I know aren't able to leave their loved ones a wish, more less a will. Again, I'm not well versed on the data provided, but it appears to me the target essential holds the folks in a higher salary bracket accountable for contributing more to the government, which has been what Obama has sold all along. It's about excusing the burden on the middle class to contribute the most to the failing government while the wealthier pay less and acquire more. Aside from the income tax data you provided, I'm not sure any of the other information disturbs me because it simply appears out of my reach at this point; even for a single person making $65K annually. All I know is Obama said from the beginning that change would not be easy, but if we could endure for a little while longer, there would be a light at the end of the tunnel. It took us 8 years to get in this mess. I don't foresee it being rectified immediately once he takes office and I can't see it being done without some type of increase in taxes. We have billions of dollars to recoup from the excessive spending of a war that has gotten us no where after six years.

Of that 65k a year, how

Of that 65k a year, how would you like to bring home about 30K? because if OBAMA gets elected, that's what will happen. then the ones who are making it fine now will have forclosures and that's more people for the gov't to take care of than before. Even if OBAMA taxes the rich 80 percent, he still doesn't have enough money to pay for all of his programs. they only make up 10 to 12 percent of the population. where do you think the rest of the money is going to come from. Wake up people! OBAMA reminds me of hitler (No he isn't the type that is going to mass execute 6 million people) Hitler had what is called the gift of gab. He could tell you he was going to take over your country and say it in a way people welcomed him. OBAMA does the same thing, but to a much lesser degree. He words things in ways that people think a change is coming. However, the only change coming is his bank account getting larger while everyone else's is getting smaller. America and especially North Carolina, its time to show the world that we will not take what our politricians say as truth. Do your research, use your right to vote to pick the right candidate, not just because your a registered republican, or because your tired of the way bush has done things.

but why?

Why should somebody that worked hard in school to become a successful wealthy person be forced to pay more for government? Just because they can afford it is about as weak as it gets. Most likely they don't use or relie on government programs like a lower income person might. Most likely their children go to private school, they don't receive food stamps, wic, housing assistance or other handout programs. If you tell me the harder I work to ensure a safe, sound future for my family means I'll have to pay more to support government programs, I'll tell you where to shove it. Could you see Best Buy implementing a program like that?? Salesperson: "Well Mr. Brown, since you earn over $100k a year, this LCD TV will cost you $15k. It will only cost Mr. Green $2k because he only makes $30k a year."
