Obama elected president

WASHINGTON -- Barack Obama has been elected president of the United States, the first African-American elevated to the White House. With victories in Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and other battleground states, Obama built a commanding lead over his Republican rival, John McCain. Obama surged in the polls amid a national financial crisis, campaigning as the candidate of change. He and his fellow Democrats sought to link McCain to the unpopular George W. Bush. The son of a black man from Kenya and a white woman from Kansas, Obama soared into the national spotlight after his electrifying speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, when he was making his first run for the Senate. Emphasizing his early opposition to the Iraq war, he defeated Hillary Rodham Clinton after a long, bruising primary fight. He then beat back Republican efforts to portray him as reckless, naive and inexperienced. He also had to combat Internet misinformation questioning his religion and patriotism. As he fought to become president, Obama attracted millions of first-time voters - and brought the historic American election to the attention of the entire world. I have two questions for Obama supporters: 1: What's the deal with Obama not putting the US Flag on his lapel jacket or standing for the National Anthem? Yes both did happen. 2: Why would Obama's wife make the comment "For the first time in my adult life I am proud to be an American and prould of America?" Sorry, but that statement alone from his wife has me totally against her.
This is your concern? I ask, again, what did mccain and tina faye oops..I mean palin say they would do for this country? and if mccain has had his hands in our government for so long why are we in this position? You need to suck it up and give someone else a chance. Sinbcerely, Obama supporter
I don't ride around with an American flag on my car, and don't wear an American flag on my clothes. But, that doesn't mean I don't love my country. I volunteered for the USMC when I was 18, but I had a medical problem which disqualified me from service. I am as patriotic as anyone I know. I just don't tie my beliefs to a lapel pin. And I really don't care much about what Ms. Obama thinks. Last time I checked, she isn't the one who will be reciting the oath of office in January. Is this what you base your political choices on? Symbolic gestures and the candidates wife? What about the issues - the economy, the war, the budget deficit, unemployment, taxes, anything? That's what is important to me.
I also don't have a problem standing with my hand over my heard when I recite the Pledge...which for unknown reasons our President-elect does. Wearing the lapel flag is a small issue, but not reciting the Pledge and putting your hand over your heart (having your hands together in front of your crotch) is a HUGE issue to me. It does show a lack of Patriotism. Add that to the remarks his wife made and I have my doubts about both of them.
>"And I really don't care much about what Ms. Obama thinks. Last time I checked, she isn't the one who will be reciting the oath of office in January....What about the issues - the economy, the war, the budget deficit, unemployment, taxes, anything? That's what is important to me." Michelle Obama may not be the one "reciting the oath of office," true; but do you seriously believe that as First Lady residing in the Washington White House, she will have *no influence whatsoever* on public policy decisions her own husband makes? With 95% of African-Americans voting for Obama, I'm sick and tired of hearing the race card played against supporters of McCain. I voted for McCain not because of Obama's race or skin color (indeed I already had voted for a black man -- Alan Keyes -- for president in a previous election); but rather because Obama has proved, both through his 100% Senate voting record and campaign promises made to the abortion-rights lobby that he has absolutely NO understanding of or respect for human life. That's the factor that totally disqualified him as a viable candidate in my eyes -- long before he even started running for the Oval office. And lest anyone chastise me for being a "single-issue voter," if any of you had lived in Nazi Germany during the 1930's and 40's, would you have supported Hitler just because under his dictatorship the economy was going great; or because of promises of free healthcare and a higher standard of living (for Aryans, at least)? How about the pro-slavery South during the 1850's -- would you have favored Douglas over Lincoln? Slavery WAS good for the economy, after all, it could be argued; or at least on the surface -- free labor on Southern farming plantations and such. Before anyone takes my words out of context and labels me a racist, that is not the case at all. I am merely using a hypothetical illustration to make a point. If any of you Obama voters lived back then and were to apply the SAME standards to those political landscapes and situations as you did in this election, in order to be consistent you would have to support Douglas and Hitler. However, human dignity and moral reason mandate that the legalized, systematic killing of an entire group of persons (in this case, Jews), or the cruel enslavement of another group just on account of their race and color, takes central precedence over *EVERY. OTHER. SINGLE. ISSUE* of the day. Abortion is no different. Since abortion-on-demand was first legalized in Roe vs. Wade, approximately 44 MILLION preborn children have lost their lives in the euphemistic name of "choice". A "choice" for *what*?? Without the right to life, all other rights and "choices" are meaningless. Those of you Obama voters born after 1973 (or 1967 here in NC) should thank your *ever lucky stars* (since a good portion of political liberals don't profess to believe in God anyway) that you just happened to be a so-called "wanted" child -- because otherwise you wouldn't even BE HERE to exercise your voting rights in this election! Think about it -- especially all you first-time voters who are too young to remember. As for myself, as a former fetus I will continue to oppose abortion, along with Barack Obama for as long as he remains hard-hearted and unchanged on this crucial, foundational issue.
You're absolutely right: Michelle Obama will NOT be reciting the Oath of Office in January. She will, however, continue to sleep with Obama because she is his wife. She therefore will have the President-Elect's ear more so than anyone else alive. To think that her views will not influence him in any way is ridiculous. I am totally unapologetic in my belief that the person who holds the highest job in this nation should be completely patriotic and proud of America. I am not sure that Obama fits that bill, and it is a disgrace to think that world leaders will see and hear his wife - the First Lady - criticizing this country in such a blistering fashion. No, you don't have to be a flag waver to convince me you are a patriotic American. However, consistent negativity and criticism will absolutely convince me that you aren't. The issues you mentioned are, of course, important to us all. But to think that a wife will hold no sway or have any influence over her husband - and therefore on HIS views and actions on those same issues - is irresponsible and ludicrous.
are you nuts ofcourse she will influance his decision making process if you have ever been married you would know, that you will do what they say or suffer incredible mental anguish and i did serve. usmc i was in beruit oct 23 1983 i have a flag on my house i love my country and he (obama) dose not deserve to hold the office of president remember the president is the commander and cheif of our military don't that just make you feel all warm and fuzzy
I cannot believe race is the biggest issue in this election. It does not matter what you look like or what your mama looks like. We are all people. We'll all find out soon enough if Obama was telling us the truth or not. Hopefully he can help our economy enough so we can keep our jobs and live happily like we did before Bush became president. Bush screwed it all up and now we have someone who promises change so quit complaining! The man just won the election yesterday.
ANYWAY, REGARDLESS WHO WON OR WHAT COLOR THE PERSON IS. GOD IS GOING TO PUT WHO HE WANTS IN THE HOUSE, AND BESIDES THAT: WERE ALL PINK INSIDE AND BLEED RED. PUT GOD FIRST!!!!!!!!!!! BIBLE PROPHECY SHALL BE FOR FILLED. MAY GOD RICHLY BLESS YOU.
The bottom line is folks, he's our next president and there's nothing anyone can do about it now!! The People have spoken and Obama was the better candidate. What we have to do as people of America is come together and support this man as he tries to clean up the mess that the Bush crew left behind. Whether you voted for or against Obama/Biden, for the sake of the next generation, we have to help these guys for the next four years get our country back the way it once was. I know for sure I don't want my son going through what I went through these last 8 years,(loss of jobs/homes, economic/wallstreet crisis etc) lord knows I don't. So my prayers and support go out to the Obama/Biden crew and Yes We Can!!!
I agree. Whether you voted for him or not, he won. Intelligent non-bigoted Americans will support their new leader. The others can MOVE to Mexico. byebye
O.K. just let me know which country you were living in these past eight years. BTW, if those who don't support Obama move, then where will he get the money to "spread the wealth?"
Ill see you there. because that's where all of our jobs will be.
bye, don't let the door hit you on the way out!
After reading all of these comments, I have came to realize that this area is filled with a lot of people that lack commonsense and are very ignorant. I just didn't realize just how many people have closed minds instead of being open. For the past 8 years things have not been good for this country, terrorist attacks, war, recession and high energy and medical costs. We have try something different if we didn't things will just continue in a downward trend.
i could not have said it any better! i had also thought this area was over populated with ignorant people. i was surprised to find out there were more than i thought. after my entire family lost savings, hope & lots of dreams, i am just in awe that there are so many people willing to continue on this downward spiral we have been on for the last 8 years. at least we can have hope once again, something we have not had for a long time.
IM QUITE SURE THAT I WAS NOT THE ONLY ONE BEING EXPOSED TO SENSELESS, IGNORANT BILLBOARDS CONCERNING BARACK OBAMA! NO NEED TO ELABORATE ON THAT BECAUSE THE COMMENTS IM READING ARE PROBABLY FROM THOSE WHO HELPED PUBLICIZE SUCH IGNORANCE. DID YOU SEE THOSE KINDS OF ADS ABOUT MCCAIN??? ME EITHER... OBAMA DIDNT FEEL THREATENED TO ALLOW HIS SUPPORTERS TO BLASPHEME MCCAIN...HE WAS CONFIDENT IN KNOWING THAT HE DIDNT NEED TO SLANDER MCCAIN TO WIN!
Hey, at least we get to keep killing them babies! The way I see it, in about three generations liberals will be extinct. They'll abort themselves to extinction. Way to go Obama! Keep killin' them babies!
please don't keep your head in the sand about who is actually getting abortions..do you really think only Liberals get abortions??? fact check please!!!! and by the way, are you in line for an adoption?? so many children need good parents!!
I agree that the race card was used in this election. Obama is 50% white and was raised by a white woman, yet the African American card was way over used. Why?? Be that as it may: A wise man recently spoke of many emails and such that he had received from people who fear this or that candidate actually winning a particular office. People who stated the world will cease to function based on a certain person being elected into the presidency. The letters and emails were sent by a variety of political party supporters who proclaim Christian Faith. Christians often forget that all Earthly kingdoms are temporary. That all Earthly leaders have temporary power. Christians all too often lose sight of the eternal Kingdom of God Almighty. Christians need to do the following. Review the Gospels. The Gospels of the Bible outline the essential composnents of politcal structures. Christian must remember that the eternal Kingdom is not of this world. We are not to focus on this temporary Earthly Kingdom, but must look forward to the Kingdom of our Lord and Savior which is to come. Think about how many times during this political season that we have heard, "this is the worst time to be a Christian." No way! The slaves of the Old Testament were opressed for over 400 years. Our country is only some 200 years old. Man, we don't have a clue about bad times! America has become too self-confiedent. We are an arrogant society. We tolerate everything and anything. With all the liberal democrats that were elected yesterday, California still voted against gay marriages. Why? How dare us think that through a presidential election that we can somehow usher in the Kingdom of God. God still maintains total control. Now, mind you, I whole hearted believe that we must vote. It is still a civic responsibility. We still must live in our society until God decides enough is enough. However, people should vote only after much prayer and evaluation of platforms, promises and issues. Only God can provide each individual with the peace of mind when it comes to casting a vote. When we listen to garbage campaign promises and ads, we become saturated. People will repeat the lies until those lies actually become believable. Seriously, look at the ads we have seen. One example given was that a particular candidate was "opposed to education." Seriously, do you think any serious candidate would oppose education? The Bible refers to "the city on the hill." Many have believed this to mean America. They use this example stating that America will be the world power. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Look at this country. Look at our financial fall out. Look at how we are crumbling in this land of tolerate everything and anything. The City on the Hill, in its literal form, is the people of God. We are the City on the Hill. We as a Christian Body become the ones that people will look up to and we must accept that responsibility with fervor. God will often grant politcal power to people after they have been to the bottom. Daniel was like that. Daniel gained his status through virtues that all Christians should possess. Discretion and Discernment. We, as Christians, are charged with obeying the government unless it coonflicts with God. Daniel was an example of this: Daniel 1:8 states, "But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way." Daniel was opressed, but was used by God to become a great leader. He obeyed the government he was under until it conflicted with God's mandates. At one point, King Nebuchadnezzar had a dream that he desired interpreted. After the king's soothsayers and religious icons were unable to interpret the dream, Daniel was given the opportunity. However, Daniel gives credit where it is due. Daniiel 2:27-30 " Daniel replied, "No wise man, enchanter, magician or diviner can explain to the king the mystery he has asked about, but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries. He has shown King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in days to come. Your dream and the visions that passed through your mind as you lay on your bed are these: "As you were lying there, O king, your mind turned to things to come, and the revealer of mysteries showed you what is going to happen. As for me, this mystery has been revealed to me, not because I have greater wisdom than other living men, but so that you, O king, may know the interpretation and that you may understand what went through your mind." Daniel takes no credit. And gives no credit to the King. God is the only onle who deserves the credit here, for He is above all governments. What we fail to remember is that God has a perfect plan. Nothing can alter that plan. Christians are set apart. However, as a righteous people, we are commanded to walk with God. We must cooperate with His plan. Cooperation is active, while tolerance is passive. We must actively seek God's desire for our lives as individuals and also as a community. Although we as Christians are not of this world, we must still live in it for a time. We must understand that God is in control of it all. Proverbs 21:1 states this (The Message Translation): "Good leadership is a channel of water controlled by God; he directs it to whatever ends he chooses." Arrogant leaders may feel they are changing the course of history or facilitating God's plan, however, God clearly shows us that he decides what will occur. Again, God is in control. Look at what children learn. I have read recently that kids in the Middle Schools here in NC have thrown fists at each other over the McCain/Obama race. Are you kidding me? What are parents teaching their children? One thing is for sure. Neither Obama nor McCain can stop the Kingdom of God. We as a Christian people must continue to look foreward and not panic about who became the President of the USA. God will use whomever is in power in the manner He so chooses. Remember that world leadership is a channel of water controlled by God; he directs it to whatever ends he chooses. With all of this in mind I will rethink many things when it comes to politics. I prayed often before I voted. I will continue to seek God's will for my life. I will continue to pray for wisdom and knowledge. I will continue to trust that His plan is above the plans or agendas of any political leader who's time is short compared to the Eternal Kingdom that I am a guaranteed member. Remember this: Christ will have eternal reign. That means forever and ever. The politcal kingdoms of this earth are all temporary. All that we see and all that we know here on Earth will cease to exist. Yet Christ will reign over His eternal kingdom. will you be there? No matter who won the races in this current election, it is not due to the amounts spent or the promises made. It is all because God desired it to happen. God will use whoever is in temporary power to bring His Kingdom closer and closer!
geeezzzz.......take a pill already!
This is all so funny. Change is coming and you have to deal with it... we delt with bush for these long 8 years and he hasnt done anything good..... if you dont like it, move.
Yes change is coming. I doubt it will be for the good. I don't like it. I will no more move than you did during the last eight years Pres. Bush was in office. So please clue me in, if you didn't like Bush why is it your still here???
It's absolutely amazing how angry and ridiculous most of you are. We live in a Democracy where citizens may vote. Well, guess what...more Americans voted for Obama yesterday than McCain. So, how about quit your name calling, quit your complaining, and focus your energy on how to bring this nation together instead of acting like a bunch of children. Here are a few facts: A majority of Americans do not care about William Ayers. A majority of Americans understand that someone has to pay for Bush's spending. A majority of Americans know what Obama meant when he was talking to Joe the plumber. A majority of Americans want us out of Iraq. A majority of Americans prefer Obama over McCain. Quit being angry and ignorant. That's what got this nation in trouble in the first place.
Thank God for our new president that reveals we are better than the ugly racists that this thread reveals. Bringing these folks out of their cloaks and hoods to light and exposing them more and more decreases their numbers and we move to a better day when they no longer have ANY voice....We are becoming what our founders wrote, but could never have imagined...ONE NATION UNDER GOD..and GOD BLESS AMERICA for it!
WOW... I KNEW THAT I WOULD BE READING THESE KIND OF COMMENTS ABOUT OUR NEW PRESIDENT!!!! HAHAHA... I KNOW MCCAIN HATED TO ADMIT THE FACT THAT THE MAN WHOM HE WAS RACING WITH IS NOW HIS PRESIDENT! HE STATED IT IN THOSE EXACT WORDS,"MY PRESIDENT" PEOPLE ARE SAYING THAT 95% OF BLACKS VOTED FOR BARACK OBAMA! OKAY AND HOW MANY WHITE PEOPLE VOTED FOR MCCAIN! EVIDENTLY NOT ENOUGH CONSIDERING THAT AMERICA IS NOT EVEN 20%BLACK! WOW... WAKE UP PEOPLE, BARACK IS MY PRESIDENT AND YOURS, ACCEPT IT!!!! HAHAHA
THIS IS REIDICULOUS THAT THROUGHOUT ALL OF THIS, PEOPLE STILL TEND TO FACTOR IN RACE AS A REASON FOR OBAMA WINNING THIS ELECTION! IM SURE YOU SAW IT JUST AS MUCH AS I DID, BUT THERE WERE PLENTY OF WHITE PEOPLE SUPPORTING THIS SENATOR! HISTORY WAS MADE, SO JUST ACCEPT THE FACT THAT OBAMA WILL BE IN OFFICE FOR THE NEXT FOUR YEARS, IF NOT EIGHT! ITS SAD THAT FOR YEARS WE HAVE ENDURED HAVING PRESIDENTS WHO WERE WHITE AND THEN WHEN A SENATOR IS VOTED PRESIDENT THAT IS BLACK, ALL HELL BREAKS LOSE! TRUE, MAYBE MANY BLACK PEOPLE DID VOTE FOR BARACK, BUT MANY OTHERS DID TOO! ALL PEOPLE, NOT JUST BLACKS WERE FED UP WITH BUSH'S ANTICS! AND LOOK AT ALL THE SLANDERING PEOPLE WERE DOING TO TRY AND DEGRADE OBAMA! THAT IS EXACTLY WHY HE WON THE VOTE! INSTEAD OF VIEWING THINGS AS RACE, YOU ALL NEED TO ACCEPT THE FACT THAT HISTORY WAS MADE! OBAMA IS HALF BLACK, HIS WIFE IS BLACK, AND DESPITE WHAT YOU ALL MAY THINK, HE IS AN INTELLIGENT MAN! THE MAIN ONES WHOM STILL ARE IN DENIAL ABOUT THIS PRESTIGIOUS MAN, WILL BE THE MAIN ONES VOTING TO RE-ELECT HIM IN 2012!WITH THAT BEING SAID, CONGRATULATIONS OBAMA! GOD DOES ANSWER PRAYERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
From what I have seen over half his votes were from White people ( I think it was like 76% or something)
God please watch over our country because we are going to need it. So many think obama as their God and idolize him. How sad. Have some people even realized this and how scary this is. I do not trust this man.
thank you for your prayer, we always need God to watch over us. i know that He watched over us for the last 8 years because had He not, we would not have have survived the last 8 years.
