Officer shoots man at suspected gambling house

READ MORE:
WILMINGTON -- A man is in the hospital Friday morning after a Wilmington Police officer shot him while serving a search warrant on a suspected gambling house. It happened at Two Trees Pools and Spas on South Kerr Avenue. Detectives obtained a search warrant earlier this week based on information that an illegal gambling operation was being run in the building. The special enforcement response team was asked to serve the warrant because investigators believed someone person inside the establishment was armed. Police Chief Ralph Evangelous and District Attorney Ben David have asked the SBI investigate the shooting. The victim is at New Hanover Regional hospital. The names of the officer and victim are still being withheld this morning.

Illegal is illegal

Those of you crying about why LEO was worried about gambling instead of drug dealers have missed the point of all this. A gun carrying convicted felon, who is not allowed to own a gun, was the lookout for an illegal operation. He pulled his weapon when police charged the business and he was shot. You guys are saying..."it's only gambling, who not go after the drug dealers?" Fine, should LEO only concern themselves with schedule I drugs since schedule VI drugs (ie marijuana) aren't as bad? Where does it stop? We won't arrest those for attempted murder, only the ones that completed the task....since attempted isn't as bad as finishing. GIVE ME A BREAK!!!! Those that feel that way are a joke and you make yourself look like an A$$

Officer shoots man at suspected gambling house

Being that uit was probably video poker machines that are fairly large, why didn't the police serve the warrants during the day or at a time no one would be there to be possibly harmed. It says the police new the owner(s) and their past histories. Couldn't they have served the search warrants and arrested the suspects without entering when other gamblers were inside? It reminds me of the Strickland case. Alot of people thought the police should have waited to pick him up away from the home. Patience was preached. I know people like Mark Benson will always critizize the Sheriffs Department and not find fault with WPD. I just think while the shooting seems justified and the police did their job, it could've been done without entering the business while it was occupied by players and watched over by an armed person. Just my two cents.

They should have watched and served the warrant when only

the suspects were there. They could have killed innocent gamblers. I would think they would have more improtant criminals to tend to besides gamblers!

Hindsight

Boy talk about a Monday morning quarterback.

Gambling House

So did they find any gambling paraphanalia in this building?

Good Job ERT

The WPD Emergency Response (SWAT) Team showed the upmost professionalism, protected themselves without taking a human life. Just think... If it had been the Sheriff's ERT Team, all the bad guys would have been shot through the door before the breech. Why isn't the name of the guy who got shot being released? Was he cia or somehting?

Sounds like

Sounds like you again Mark Benson!! you need help my friend, you would live alot longer if you would except the fact that your a has been, in fact talking to the guys, you never where!! ps.. your radio show sucks!! unless your from NYC.

these are top notch people

I have never met Mark Benson, or his brother the skinny Benson guy. They are good guys based on the way they treated the Columbus Murder rap situation of the dude at Burger King. I was around that night. Will NOT elaborate further, but that guy served far more than he should have for a moment of bad judgment that might have left more than his bother dead. Mark did good, I have cried over this. My two year old cried over this. She will be OK, but life is precious, take it in earnest only. My Columbus County Brothers will know what to do from now on.

Re: Good Job ERT

Let it go my friend...let it go

WPD Shooting

It wasn't so much about the gambling (although it is illegal) as it was the convicted felon carrying a firearm where ever he went committing crimes.

How cool

That would be great. Then criminals would get the message we are tired of their crap.

NO-LIMIT

Yeah, criminals. Who hasn't gone to a poker game. There are games all over town. Big freakin' deal. Give me a break. Catch some real criminals. Gambling, sheesh!! March madness is coming up. Brackets will be in every office. Watch out, you're gonna get busted too!

Exactly

And let's not forget the ever popular state sponsered gambling, the NC Educational Lottery. I posted the following in the newer article about the SBI investigating the shooting (the quoted parts are from that article, not this one). Whether either will show up or not...: "They said there were people going in and out of the business constantly and at all hours of the night." Sounds like jealousy to me. It is a BUSINESS after all. People ARE going to be going in and out. "Also that each time someone would go to the door, they would have to knock, then be let into the business." And this is a crime? Gee, how many clubs of varying types will only let certain people in? Again, sounds like jealousy because someone wasn't let in. "And on some occasions, the owner, William Inman, would serve as a bouncer, ..." Gee, how many clubs or even businesses in general have some form of security? I guess it's illegal only if you're in the right position and get turned down for admittance. Again, jealousy. As to the gun, that has yet to be fully determined. As much as I personally oppose weapons, if he had a legal right to carry, then it shouldn't have been considered against him. After all, if it were seen, then it isn't concealed. As to the gambling, I've already heard enough of the hypocrisy about "video poker machines are immoral and criminal but a state funded lottery is moral and legal because government officials are making something extra off of it". It's truly idiotic for authority figures to complain about gambling machines and call the players criminals (which HAS been done) and to turn around and not make such claims against those who play or support the lottery (which IS gambling). So, yes, the SBI SHOULD be investigating. And more than just the shooting, quite frankly. Andrew

THE THING IS, HE WASN'T

THE THING IS, HE WASN'T RUNNING A NIGHT CLUB, IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A POOL AND SPA STORE. WHY WOULD BE PEOPLE NEED TO GO IN THERE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT CONSTANTLY?? BESIDES HE'S A CONVICTED FELON AND THE COPS KNEW IT BEFORE THEY GOT THERE. MR. INMAN IS LUCKY HE DIDNT GET KILLED BY THAT COP! SBI ARE JUST FOLLOWING STANDARD PROCEDURE.

Not me

I won't, not because I think it is bad or because it may be illegal... I just don't care about NCAA.
