Old Meat Packing Plant May Turn Into Park in Navassa

This old Cape Fear Meat Packing Plant was built in 1919. They used to slaughter cattle and hogs at the plant which operated for only four years because the plant's owner, was found dead, hung in the middle of the plant. 85 years later, the plant sits abandoned. Soon, that will change because of the new Interstate 140 that will pass right between the old packing plant and the Cape Fear River. Navassa mayor Eulis Willis says: " the town of Navassa has never done anything for historical preservation. We have a unique culture and tradition and this meat packing plant reflects that. We thought if we could preserve this building, then we could put a little park around it and we'd have our first tourist attraction." The goal for the town of Navassa is to be held "not liable" for any contamination on the property that might exist. After all, the plant closed in 1923. Back then Navassa was not incorporated. That occurred 54 years later.

me and friend hung out there tonite

yo man dat thing is bangin me and my friends all went there tonite to hang out round 9:00pm. when i was told that it was hauntted i didnt want to go but i went any wayz. there is this long a** road you gotta go down it took up and half anf hour thats how long it was to get htere then there it wqas BAM in fron of you the building. Whenn i looked in it i was like im not goion up there im get killed from these holes in the floor and the bricks ever where and the stairs wat the hell im not goin to die this young. Then they told me that the owner was found haning in the builfing i was liek greeat now im see a dead person haunting the place chaseing us out his building. Then they told me that a girl was drunk and fell down the elveltor shelf i was like great now we delfinalty going to die. We in the same place to people died at wat the hell man but please dont tear it down its a greeat history and to tell you the truth if you guys put up a sing that had everything on it wat went on there people would learn a lot but its not safe for litle kids to be goin to with all them holes in the ground i was like wat is that hole for everyone was like shut up. I was like im fall in a hole. But if you like history that is a place to be to learn bout everything that went oner there its really neat.

mitchell and lindsey went there today

my girlfriend actually just took me there today. It is a neat place to see. It's not scary at all except for the parts that are falling apart. People have wrote evil signs all over it. But we had fun looking at everything. It's also cool seeing how things were built years ago, and trying to figure out what all the diffrent holes in the floors are for. Also trying to figure out what went on in each room. I do have to say the 5th floor is the nicest it has brick floors and a table haha.

Man me and my friends go out there all the time. yeah it dangerous but if your not drinking or smoking you will be alright as long as you pay attention to where your going and what you are doing. it is a very historical sight for the town of brunswick county

me and my friends went out there recently, and its really creepy, we went once during the day and once at night. They have the road blocked off to it now so you have to walk all the way back to it. But the place is really falling apart,in away I don't want them to tear it down , but then again I hear all of drugs and cult stuff happens there. Still an awesome place to go to though!

omg...i went there back in the early 80's in highschool....all the ghost stories, when you drove down that dirt road and rounded the corner and BAM!!! there it was...very creepy. There was a story that a girl feel down the elevator shaft in also died. Not sure if it was true but is was very scarey back in the day.

this building should have been torn down 40 years ago I played there like many other teens. Not a good place to be back then, in the 60's and has got to be worse now. Who would want to go to a place where so many deaths took place hogs,cows,and a person.

Now we all know, if someone wants to buy a piece of property such as an old gas station, the new owner would be liable for the clean-up. Let see if Navassa can get some "favors".. after all, it's not their fault the land might need clean up. What a pathetic argument. That doesn't work for any of us, why should that work for them.

Sorry, but unless you are a true "local" to the area, this probably does mean nothing to you. However, as a teenager, we spent many a night hanging out at the "haunted" meat packing plant. Thinking about it now, it was very dangerous, the elevator shafts and stuff, but we sure had fun out there! On a good night we'd even drive over and find the Maco light. Come on, someone out there has to know what I'm talking about...

When I was in high school we would go back to the meat packing plant, quit a bit. We would have to park our cars on the road and then walk back there. I always loved going, not only for the underage drinking and the belief that we were such rebels to be doing such a thing, but that there were so many stories. I never knew that a man had hung himself. I had heard about the boy falling down the elevator shaft. I am kind of glad to know that the building is still sitting back there.

My goodness, the old meat packing plant. Yeah, as teenagers, we did get out to that spot only it wasn't for the scenery. I thought they had demolished that building a long time ago. Honestly, whoever wants to turn it into a park should be responsible for the cleanup and any safety issues.

I hope they can preserve all the history since the plant has been torn down because after all it's not the fact that it's a meat packing plant that makes it special It's all the memories we as locals have of the place( old ghost stories, just hangin out or all the other crazy things We have heard over the years.) So I abosolutly think it's a great idea but.... Who ever wants to reap the profit should be the one responsible for clean up and saftey issues.

I know what you are talking about!!!! I grew up not to far from this area and I remember hanging out at the old meat packing plant. We had a lot of fun hanging out there. I hate to think that it is going to be torn down.

Been a long time since I went lookin for old JOE. tHAT OLD MEAT PACKIN PLANT COULD BE A JUMPIN PLACE ON SATURDAY NIGHTS. Yep a long time...... seems a lifetime ago. There was a tressle about a quarter mile down the tracks,east of Maco road. We used to hike down to it in the wee hours of the night. Tryin to scare our girlfriends so they would hold on just a bit more tight.. I seen that light a few times you know, But when they pulled up them tracks,,,,, well that was the end of old JOE.
