Former police chief charged with murder

A former police chief in Onslow County is facing a murder charge for allegedly shooting a marine almost 36 years ago. 57 year-old George Hayden was charged with killing marine Sgt. William Miller. Miller was found shot to death on September 16, 1972, after returning from a deployment. Investigators reports show that Hayden had moved into Miller's mobile home, and that Hayden later left with Miller's wife. The sheriff's office said a cold case report in a local newspaper inspired a key witness to come forward.

This is truly a miracle for the family of the victim. Lady Justice was waiting for 36 years, now the suspects have to answer for their actions. More links on this case at: http://miraclesstillhappen36yearslater.blogspot.com/
Miller was in Okinawa training. Hayden was a fellow Marine. He moved in with Miller's wife and year old daughter. Miller came home and had to get the cops to evict Hayden. Miller's wife took his daughter and went with Hayden. She called days later and asked Miller to meet her on Western Blvd. Miller was shot twice and died on Western Blvd. Hayden had told the cops he "would take care of Miller with his 16". Miller was shot twice with an M16. A car matching Hayden's was seen at the scene. Hayden and Mrs. Miller could not get their stories straight. Hayden said they were home watching tv, but Mrs. Miller said they were out shopping for a tv because they did not have one. Their neighbor said no one was home. Ballistics tests were inconclusive. Hayden married Miller, but they eventually divorced and she has since remarried twice and moved to Oregon. Hayden was police chief of Cape Carteret, where his son is also on the police force, and recently a cop in Belhaven where he lives. The wife was charged with murder and conspiracy as well. These two were always suspects, but there was not enough evidence. NCIS Cold Case unit formed in the 90's and they and the Sherriff's Dept. here have kept working it. The Daily News has been running a cold case series and that prompted a witness, who is still so fearful of Hayden that they are keeping his identity a secret, to finally come forward. Of course, imagine being in the position of knowing someone this dangerous committed murder and then became involved in law enforcement. What surprises me is that she and Hayden killed her husband and then five or six years later, they were going their separate ways. I'd like to hear if they still think it was worth it.
Did the wife had a part in this??? How did he live his life??? How did the wife live all these years knowing that he killed her husband???
