Optimist Club sets up fund for kids' prescriptions

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A Wilmington civic group is jump starting a new fund to help out children in need. Optimist of the Port City established the Pediatric Pharmacy Fund.

Today the group started the fund with a donation of $1,000 to the Betty H. Cameron Women's and Children's Hospital at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. It's an annual program to support children whose pharmaceutical needs are beyond the capability and support of insurance, medicaid, or their family's financial resources.

The group says the fund will have a huge impact.

"This is only the beginning, and so we are looking at other Optimist Clubs and other civic clubs out there to join in and help establish this fund so we can serve all children in this area, so there's a quality of life and they don't have to worry or stress over the medications that are needed for their treatments," said Lori Harris, Optimist of the Port City president.

To find out how to donate to the fund, go to and click on the Give a Gift button. People can earmark their donation for the pediatric pharmacy fund.
