Oregon Inlet Life Saving Station to get upgrades

READ MORE:
OREGON INLET, N.C. -- Although its final fate remains uncertain, the old Oregon Inlet Life Saving Station on North Carolina's Outer Banks will get some upgrades to thwart the ravages of sand and time. The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk, Va., reported the state-owned building will be raised 10 feet and placed on pilings. The concrete floor will be replaced by wood. If there's enough money, the roof will be replaced and the three-story tower will be renovated. The nine-month project is estimated to cost $700,000 and begin within 60 days. The station was built in 1897, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Coast Guard last used the station in 1988. It is now administered by the North Carolina Aquariums. Because of its location near the Bonner Bridge, the building's fate is tied to what design is chosen for a new bridge, expected later this year. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. Oregon Inlet Life Saving Station

My husband and I noticed this building while staying in Salvo two years ago. Last year, we stopped and I walked up to the building and photographed it from all angles. I even emailed the Coast Guard for more info. The building was weather-worn. There was a chain link fence topped with barbed wire that I could have stepped over if I had a mind to due to the sand being so high. But, the view to the ocean from the main building was truly beautiful! I could look at that all day--every day! It is a shame that the building was neglected so! I hope something GOOD is planned for this structure. It deserves some TLC!

I was googleing last week, I hade cam a across this building. I did not know any thing about it or what it was. Until I did some research. It is Oregon Inlet life saving station. I am happy that the city of North Carolina will be restoring it. It looks like it needs some help. I hope they get the money they need.
