The City of Wilmington is now cracking down on waste; in the name of cleaner storm water. A new ordinance went into effect Sunday. Pet owners can be fined $250 if they do not pick up after their pets in public places. If left on the ground, the waste runs off into our water through storm drains, contaminating the water and spreading disease. Most pet owners say they are okay with the new rules. “I think it's a good thing. I think it's going to help contribute to our water quality and protecting our natural resources, which I think is important,” said dog owner Mike Lardieri. “I think if more people got educated about storm water runoff and what happens when the waste is washed in our streams, they'd be for it too.” Homeowners are also required to keep storm drains on their property free of debris or pollutants to maintain flow of water and keep it clean.

Cats also should be included. Scientists in California have found that sea lions are dying due to toxoplasmosis which one source is water runoff containing cat feces.

Cleaning up behind your pets

Finally someone is doing the right thing. Other towns such as Southport should pass and enforce cleanup behind your pet laws (on both public and private property). I am sick and tired of stepping in cat feces in my driveway and yard from my neighbor's cats.

About time. Aside from the run off issue, it is just plain disgusting to drop feces in public places AND on other people's property. Feces is, well feces.

Next time my dog does it, im picking it up and smearing it on your front door.

My flower bed

My favorite is the owners allowing their dogs to urinate in my flower bed. One idiot told me she didn't know it would kill the flower. How dumb can you be?

some people

It's people like you that think there dog can go where they want that caused this.If you do what you say it probably would be the first time you picked it up.

Hope this includes cats.

unfortunatley, it does not cover cats, though I suspect that cats are great contributors to the problem.
