E-mails, letters and phone records have all provided insight in to the relationship between the now married Brunswick County teenager and her track coach. We know more about how the relationship evolved, but could the school system or should the school system have done more to stop it? The Brunswick County School Board has rules in place, specifically prohibiting relationships like Windy and Brent Wuchae's. Parents we spoke to say it was ultimately up to the school board to stop what was going on. "I had sons and this is every parents worst nightmare," Parent Patti Hamilton said. That's what other parents say about the situation the Hagers faced. Windy Hager's parents say they did everything they could to stop her from becoming involved with her track coach, even contacting the school. The school does have policies in place to prevent student-employee relationships. That said, Brunswick County has had four student-employee relationships in the past year. The official policy states: "All employees and independent contractors of the Brunswick County Board of Education, other than student employees, are prohibited from dating, courting, or entering into a romantic or sexual relationship with any student who is enrolled in the Brunswick County school system, regardless of the student's age or consent" Parents say, the school system is responsible to do more to try and stop it. "It seems to be that a lot the responsibility lies with the coach as well as the school system," Hamilton said, "Again he was the adult in this relationship." "I feel the school system has ultimate responsibility to and to parents to protect the children," Parent Jon Spetrino said. "I think the school system failed the parents," Another Parent, Judy Hamilton Brooks said, "Teachers are responsible as role models. That man knew right from wrong." Brunswick County School Superintendent Katie McGee told us the district's practices regarding the policy on student teacher relationships is being revised for the new school year. In the past, a teacher would simply get a copy of the policy when hired. Now the policy will be reviewed with every employee at the start of the year.
