The film and theatre community is mourning a great loss. Actor Pat Hingle died Saturday night after a battle with blood cancer. Family, friends, and fans say it was rare to find an actor who excelled both on stage and in films. His infectious grin and everlasting twinkle in his eye touched the hearts of people from coast to coast. While movie and theatre legend Pat Hingle may have passed away, his spirit will linger forever. Friend and producer Francine DeCoursey said, "He has such a humble spirit, there is no ego, he is a real person." Lou Buttino, a colleague and friend, said, "When he was telling you a story, his eyes would light up, and he had this big dimple, and oh, the way he could tell stories, it was just amazing to me." Lou Buttino was a true blue friend to Hingle. He has been asked to write his biography, a life Buttino said is almost impossible to replicate. "When someone dies, we often talk about them in superlatives, but Pat Hingle was a superlative." Francine DeCoursey was with Pat when he celebrated his 84th birthday this past July. Decoursey said Hingle knew he was going to die, but told her he'll never truly be gone. "So I asked him what he was thinking on his 84th birthday, and he said you know, ‘I don't fear death, I don't welcome it, but I don't welcome it. All my affairs are in order, Julie the love of my life is taken care of, I am ready to go when the time comes.’ " Friends say if you take a drive to Carolina Beach, a place Pat Hingle loved so much, you'll find his spirit, on land and sea. The family plans to spread his ashes in the ocean in front of their Carolina Beach home in the coming months.
