Pender County gives planning committee suggestions on Highway 17

READ MORE:
PENDER COUNTY -- Thursday night Pender County residents gave the planning committee suggestions about how to control rapid growth along Highway 17. One possible fix: something called an overlay district. It allows planning and zoning to control a thousand feet on either side of 17. It's a topic that drew a big crowd. Many residents say the meeting to discuss growth is welcome, but overdue. Hampstead Homeowner's Association president Al Freimark said, "We're going to look back ten years, 15 years, 20 years and say why didn't we do it when we had a chance. In many cases the horse is already out of the barn." An overlay district might alleviate some of the problems in the fast growing Pender County community. That would mean 1,000 feet on each side of 17, where the planning board could control aesthetics, landscaping and new residential and commercial development. Another thing on officials' radar: a bypass added to Highway 17. "It doesn't function well," Freimark said. "There's too many curb cuts. Secondly it also has to look good. People are concerned about aesthetics but they're also concerned about safety and functionality." Hampstead resident and state Rep. Carolyn Justice attended the meeting. She says meetings like this one are important to the area, because you can't have growth without planning for it. Rep. Justice said, "We have a real traffic situation in Hampstead and we need to come to some solutions. And the Department of Transportation has jumped in and is willing to do their part -- they just need to know what the citizens want." The County Planning Commission will now take resident feedback, and hopefully create a citizen task force to oversee the overlay project.

Walmart

When is Walmart and others coming for the 210E and 17 intersection and do we know how the infrastructure is set up for that area? I think that the by pass should be to tie 210W and 210E back together without a merge on 17N. Most people from the Topsail Island area are traveling to Wilm on their morning commute, this would help city limit traffic.

walmart

walmart closed the land on oct 31st shouldnt be long harris teeter walgreens hwy 17 east are gonna blow up thats why building is still boomin here

Spoken like...

the true scholar you must be.

walmart

"the true scholar you must be." Let me guess, you spend your weekends at Wal-mart and buy all you Christmas gifts there? How lucky to be on your Christmas list. Did I have to go into a long dissertation on Wal-mart and how they mistreat their employees, put Mom & Pop stores out of business, add more urban blight to our communities, have huge sweat shops in China to pump out the cheaply made products (over 80% of Wal-Mart’s suppliers are from China) do you remember "Buy American" !! , under pay/promote women, unpaid overtime, not to mention the environmental damage the stores cause. All this from a company that pocketed $6.6 billion in profits last year. Look behind that yellow smiley face and see what is really happening to the "associates". The majority get $6,$7 an hour except the men I knew there that made $12+, the managers have huge salary plus HUGE bonuses ,long time cashiers that make just above minimum wage while the newer hires get more, a meager health care plan that the employee pays for, no pension, no future. There's a revolving door at Wal-mart workers coming in, seeing the reality of it. That's what's happening behind closed doors. .....is this a better comment for you?

I have an idea

In the words of Larry the Cable Guy, don't go to freaking Wal Mart. No one is making you go there or work there. And just to clarify one thing. Almost every business in this country that sells a product will have bonuses for management if the sales quota is met. "That's all I got to say 'bout that"

HAVING A WAL-MART IN THE

HAVING A WAL-MART IN THE SURF CITY, HOLLY RIDGE AREA WOULD HELP SAVE "FUEL" AND, TIME.. IS THE WAY WE LOOK AT IT..IT WILL ALSO BE VERY NICE TO HAVE AN UPSCALE GROCERY STORE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD LIKE THE HARRIS TEETER STORE NOT TO MENTION ANOTHER DRUG STORE. PEOPLE ARE GOING TO CONTINUE TO SHOP AT WAL-MART NO MATTER WHAT PEOPLE SAY...DRIVE BY THE PARKING LOT IN ANY TOWN AT ANY TIME OF THE DAY OR NIGHT...LOOK AT THE PARKING LOT! AS FAR AS "BEING ON SOMEONES CHRISTMAS LIST" MAYBE THAT IS ALL THAT SOME PEOPLE CAN AFFORD!!!! IT IS THE THOUGHT THAT COUNTS AFTER ALL....! IS IT NOT???????????? MAYBE YOUR NOT ON ANYONE'S CHRISTMAS LIST! WE SEE ALL OF THIS GROWTH AS A "TIME SAVER" I WOULD RATHER SPEND MORE TIME WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS..RATHER THEN SITTING IN TRAFFIC AND IN MY CAR. MY HUSBAND TAKES THE I-140 BY-PASS TO GET TO WORK EVERYDAY..RATHER THEN THE 210-W..WE KNOW SOME PEOPLE DON'T LIKE CHANGE BUT, CHANGE IS COMING!!
