Perdue frees up $38 million for North Carolina counties

Next week, North Carolina counties will get $38 million in overdue lottery funds earmarked for school construction. In late February Governor Beverly Perdue took the money to deal with state budget issues, forcing many county leaders to scramble to find another way to make debt payments on building projects. Perdue said she is now able to free up the money because the books are closed on the fiscal year and there is some cash available.

"Governor Beverly Perdue took the money to deal with state budget issues"........ shouldnt have been taken for something else. The Lottery has a portion to go to the educational side, this shouldnt have been touched. I bet if you look at everything across the board, there are many areas that should have been cut. Wow, good one Bev.

Gov Perdue frees up lottery money

I guess Gov Perdue feels much better now that she will have all that sales tax money to spend. Raising taxes during this difficult economy and with one of the highest unemployment levels of any state in the U.S. is totally irresponsible. One of her liberal support groups even remarked that we would have more money in our pockets as a result of the tax increase. What nonsense.

Raise Taxes.

The 2009 North Carolina General Assembly passed legislation that provides for a temporary additional 1% State sales and use tax effective on September 1, 2009 and will expire on July 1, 2011. The Senate Bill 202, was ratified by the House of Reps and the Senate on August 5, 2009 and has been signed by Governor Perdue. The result an additional 1% State rate increase. So I guess your right, that's why some money is being freed up. Everyone check and see how your representatives voted on this. Raising taxes now with a poor economy was insane. And they wonder why the stimulus continues to fail.

Lotto Money

Thank goodness some Lotto money is finally being freed up and used on education, which is where it should go.
