Perdue: NC Medicaid program spending over budget

READ MORE:
RALEIGH -- Gov. Beverly Perdue says North Carolina's Medicaid program is breaking the budget the Legislature gave state officials this summer. Perdue told reporters Tuesday the government health insurance program for low-income children, older adults and the disabled is at least $150 million over budget through the first quarter of the fiscal year. Perdue says more people are enrolling in Medicaid as the unemployment rate stay high. The governor also says the state has had to respond to the swine flu pandemic. The Department of Health and Human Services said it would have more information later Tuesday and couldn't immediately confirm Perdue's figure. Department Secretary Lanier Cansler said in October that 8,000 more people were enrolled in Medicaid than projected. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)

Try again Common

You are some piece of work. You have been whining for months now that Obama is turning our country into a socialist society. Now you are looking to China for ideas on how to make our society better? China is a dictatorship...is that what you want? Mandatory sterilization of citizens? Who cares what kind of health care a person earning $12 per hour gets? YOU are what is wrong with our society. YOU represent everything BAD in our society. YOU were obviously born with a silver spoon in your mouth. YOU act more entitled than any poor person in this country. YOU are a moron. And by the way, anyone who thinks the American health care system is so great is being fooled. Anyone who thinks that has obviously never been ill or dealt with anyone who has been ill over a long period of time. Our health care system is terribly flawed and needs government intervention to fix it. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

No need to try again

Let me put it terms so simple even you can understand them: If you cannot support your offspring, you do not have a right to produce offspring. Is that basic enough for you? I'm sure that in your sappy mind, "We can't let them starve, but we also can't control their reproduction." Here's a wake-up call - if they ACT like dogs and cats, we spay and neuter them. If you can afford ten kids, have ten kids. If you can't afford to feed the two kids you have, don't expect us to let you have a third kid. What I represent is everything LOGICAL and FINANCIALLY SOUND in our society. You cannot allow the upper fifty percent of tax payers to pay 97.3% of the personal income taxes collected. You cannot allow 48% of the population to pay no income taxes. Do you have any idea WHY the Soviet Union collapsed, and why China didn't? Do you have any idea why countries like Sweden, Holland, France, et al are reducing their social benefit programs? It's because your Sesame Street/Barney Utopia is ALWAYS destined to fail financially. The poor stop trying because they know the government will take care of them, and the productive, successful memebers of society stop trying because they know the government will simply take most everything away from them. Take time to research how many billions of Euros France lost when they enacted a millionaire's tax on large homes. Rich people packed up and left. The same thing is starting to happen right here in the United States. Rich people are making plans to leave if the Socialist plans continue. You can cry all you want to about me being "what's wrong," but history, Economics, and common sense are on my side. 2 + 2 cannot equal 10, and printing new money simply devalues the existing money. You either carry your own load and manage your own life or you fall by the wayside, the only exception being the truly disabled and handicapped. It really IS that simple....if you want this nation to survive. (BTW, born into poverty. Had a net worth of around $2k less than twenty years ago. So YOU try again.)

It can equal 10

Wrong common, 2+2 can equal 10. Two adults reproducing irresponsibly will equal 10 kids they can't afford and will expect you and me to pay for. If I have to pay for them, they need to come cut my yard in the summer, rake the leaves in the fall and paint the house in the spring.

It is fine

I don't pay a dime for my healthcare. YOu taxpayers pay for me. If it is made available to more people that will mean less for me.

So people...what is your solution?

Everyone can sit around and complain about the government getting involved in Health Care as much as you want. But NONE of you have suggested an alternative that will work any better. If any of you think that doctors, hospitals, drug companies, and insurance companies are going to come together to devise a fair plan to provide health care for everyone, you are CRAZY!!! Commonsense, it would be awesome if everyone worked and paid their own way. But to suggest this as a solution shows how terribly out of touch you are with the issues. There is no way a single person making $12 per hour can afford decent health insurance in this country. Not to mention those who make even less. Unfortunately everyone in society can't be a lawyer, business owner, accountant, manager, etc. Considering it is almost 2010 and 40 million people in this country have no health insurance shows how pathetic our system has been up to this point. I'm glad you are doing well for yourself...I am doing well for myself...but millions are not. Your chronic complaining is getting very old. If anyone out there can suggest a VIABLE alternative to the government getting involved, I would love to hear it. I wish I knew how to fix things, but I don't. PS: My father-in-law has had a HORRIBLE trip thru our current health system over the last 8 weeks. Once you see first hand how our current system works, the need for health care reform becomes more and more obvious.

Here are the beginnings of a solution for healthcare

With all of the news and politics about healthcare, it's probems, who will manage it, who will get it, who doesn't, etc., ect. I have heard nobody address the fundamental problems with fundamental solutions. No. 1: STOP the FRAUD. It hasn't even been addressed and will get worse by orders of magnitutude if the government takes control. There are 100 theives with 100 schemes waiting for every program offered the day it rolls out. The penalty for medical fraud should be nothing less that dismemberment for 1st time offenders. No. 2: Cut the ties of lobbying by pharmaceutical companies. No. 3: Cut the ties between the insurance companies and the pharmaceutical companies. No. 4: Prohibit the doctors from being pill pushers for ther pharmaceutical companies and getting kickbacks for it. Way to many useless prescriptions are written every day. No. 5: Place reasonable limits on costs of medical procedures. $450,000.00 for bypass surgery is a bit tall. $15,000.00 to birth a child? We can do better than this. We all know doctors and surgeons want to get wealthy, but if they want to get filty rich, they can play in the stock market or devise a ponzi scheme and suffer the potential consequences. No. 6: USE ELECTRONIC DATA!!!! This is 2009 for Christ's sake, we have computers now! cut the paper, trim the hospital admin. from 3 floors to 10 cubicles. Everything for a patient is still on paper and has to be hand carried. No. 7: Pharmaceuticals again. Everybody understands that phamaceutical research and approval is a long and expensive process, but $400.00 a week for an elderly persons precription??? C'mon! No. 8: Deny medical treatment to anyone that is not a legal US citizen or is not legally engaged to become one. They can go back home to get the care that their own country provides. No. 9: Close the borders down to prevent illegal immigration. This will eventually assist with No. 8 above. Now...this is a biggie that keeps getting worse and is waaaaaaay out of control as it is. WHY it this being allowed to continue? Who's pocket is getting packed by this one? Let's get an answer and get it now!!! STOP! No. 10: Anyone that is on Medicare or Medicaid must submit to a weekly drug screen and pass it to receive any benefits. This is simple, common sense, easy, first grade stuff. This is the tip of the iceberg. There are a ton of companies and people getting filthy rich by taking advantage of those with less. The average, everyday, hardworking soul, jut trying to raise a family. One hiccup and his chances for life are OVER! I'm not against capitalism, but what we have here is nothing less that government mandated greed that is running rampant. It is the greed that must somehow be curtailed.

way to go!

You have presented some fabulous items to begin. Unfortunately, they will never do it. USA will fall before the corruption subsides. I hate the negativity, but reality is...people need hard lessons before they will realize you can't have government run everything in their lives. However, the government has bred this problem by allowing all Godliness to be removed and then blaming God for all the problems. We don't get it both ways. I pray for my children and my family. But prayer also needs action on my part, being responsible as an adult, by not having more children than able to pay for starters. However, having more and more children is deeper rooted than irresponsibility. Everyone knows how to not get pregnant, it's really simple. We don't need MORE education on this, we need more God in America. Alot of welfare recipients are sitting in church pews every Sunday, but it takes ACTION to die to self and live for God. Praise and worship are nothing if it's only done 2 hours on Sunday and then the rest of the week is living for Satan. That goes for everyone sitting in pews, not just welfare recipients. My husband is a pastor and we see "the business men" doing the same things. The hearts are dark in most. We still have to love, but it is harder and harder these days.

Perhaps that person making $12 an hour.....

...just has to live with the healthcare they can AFFORD? How about savings? How about using Medac? How about going without a cellphone and cable? How about riding a bike to work? Or walking? Where did we ever get this nonsensical view that the poor rate every single benefit in life even if they can't afford it? We give them food, we give them healthcare, we give them free daycare, we give them a place to live. Now we are actually giving them taxpayer provided cellphones!!! Where does it end? 40 million without healthcare? That means 268 million WITH healthcare....and you want to play around with that? You want to spread the walth so that even more people are on the dole? Here's what you seemingly fail to grasp - this country is horribly overcommitted financially. We can't afford to be everything to everyone. We can't afford to keep playing Santa. We have to tell people that THEY are responsible for THEIR lives. You want some solutions? Try these, though I'm sure you'll cry about all of them: On TANF and Medicaid and get pregnant again? No increase in TANF and mandatory tubal ligation after the child is born. Second case of fathering an illegitimate child, mandatory vasectomy. Senior applying for Medicaid? Five years worth of financial records provided and investigated. Search of real estate tranactions to make sure you're not hiding assets in the family. Stop states from mandating what constitutes "basic coverage" and allow people to customize their healthcare to what they need. Most of all, lose this insane notion that the government is here to devote 90% of its efforts to making the poor feel "un-poor!" (I'd really like to make it illegal to even have a child unless the household income is $40k, but too many sob-sisters would moan about that. Meanwhile, China and their one-child limit rocket past us and lend us trillions to finance our national recklessness.) So it may be "old" to you, but until we get tough, grow backbones, and knock off this acceptance of individual irresponsibility, this country is destined for financial ruin. Which will you prefer - defaulting on our obligations or raising taxes to pre-Reagan levels?

All I have to say Common is,

All I have to say Common is, "Here, Here!" I read the news on this site daily and I read all the comments but you seem to be one of the few that writes what most of us already know and/or think without worrying about being politically correct...it's nice to see the honesty and not the PC garbage...

Are you serious??

You would seriously like to make it illegal to have a child unless the household income is over $40K??? I hope that you are kidding!! My husband and I together don't make $40K - but we have a daughter, and she has a puppy, and we rent a nice house (not huge - but enough for us), in a nice neighborhood (it doesn't have a gym or 3 tennis courts, but it has a pool and a great park), we pay our car pymnt, rent, insurance, electricity, cable, phone EVERY MONTH, put clean, nice clothes on our daughter's back and put healthy food on the table. Just because somebody doesn't make what YOU think is the minimum acceptable standard for living, doesn't mean they can't raise happy, healthy children.

Many blessings to you and

Many blessings to you and your most fortunate daughter!

I pulled $40 k out of the air

My last child was born in 1976, so I have no idea what it costs to raise a child right now. If you and your husband are doing it on less than $40k, more power to you. I am far more concerned with those people who bear children they're NOT feeding, they're NOT clothing, and they're NOT taking care of....and the saps who think we shouldn't address that situation.

Numbers

If 40 million people in this country have no no health care does that mean that there is 325 million that does? Sounds like something is working.

It will only get worst

It will only get worst with gov't run health care. What will happen when they need more money? They will increase the taxes on the ones that work to better themselves, to pay for those that don't care.

Really? No kidding?

Well imagine that? Medicare over budget. Blame it on the Swine Flu pandemic and unemployment. It definitely has nothing to do with illegal aliens using it now or any other form of government mismanagement, right. Like I've said so many times, how can the people of this great country possible believe the government can manage a nationwide health care plan? They will manage it by excuses and raising taxes to cover their inept ability TO manage. Getting the picture yet?

Medicaid spending....let me guess....

...the only answer is higher taxes, right? Can't anyone understand that this is what happens when you stop holding people accountable for managing their own lives? Irresponsible breeding by low-income adults leads to nothing more than a new generation of low-income, irresposible breeders! The number of worthless sponges, sucking society dry, just keeps increasing. In addition to people delivering children they can't afford, we have a cottage industry of lawyers helping seniors FAKE poverty so that they qualify for Medicaid in addition to Medicare. "Sure thing, Pop! You can sign the farm over to junior but still live there AND stick it to the taxpayers." (If "Pop" had one ounce of integrity he'd sell the farm to pay his outstanding medical bills and move into an rental.) But heck - who cares at this point? Let's just watch it all crumble around our ears. Encouraging dependence upon government and nailing the dopey suckers who work and pay taxes are the orders of the day under the current regimes, state and federal. No one in government is going to stand up to the parasites. No one is going to tell them, "You can't do that and expect others to pay for it." After all, it was the parasites who contributed heavily to the current regimes being elected. They may contribute absolutely nothing, but they can vote! God help this country.

common

Agreed. Would say Amen but I cant. :) Too many welfare recipients breeding, generation after generation. Problem is, it is normal to them and NO ONE is telling them otherwise. One child per Mother, period. Any more and you get not a dime. Like that will ever happen. We will keep working so they can get paid to breed uncontrollably.

Stupid Perdue

So Perdue, I hate to call her Governor, take more services and benefits away from the elderly and physically disabled and build another pier complete with ballroom at Nagshead for $25m, or provide even more room for the polar bears at the state zoo for $10m and waste more money on useless projects in North Carolina. All this was done by you and the worthless Legislators this year and now you have the nerve to complain about overuse of Medicaid by people who need it. You should be impeached and DHHS Secretary Lanier Cansler, Dr. Craigon Gray, and Lisa Wainwright should be fired for doing what you are doing to our most vulnerable citizens. Those with disabilities they can't help and you 4 people want to take away valuable services, increase costs for worthless things and waste money. I hope the families of our citizens who need the valuable services you are taking away from them will march on you people in Raleigh and let you know what a disgraceful government you have there. A bunch of desk jockeys who don't know what goes on out here in the real world and don't care. I believe you and them will be one termers.
