Perdue says Dell will pay back every "red cent"

READ MORE:
DURHAM -- Gov. Beverly Perdue says North Carolina has no choice but to keep offering incentives packages to attract out-of-state companies even with the closing of the Dell computer plant. But Perdue told reporters Thursday she's made plain to Dell the state expects back every "red cent" it's owed in tax breaks and other benefits because it didn't meet job and investment performance standards. Dell announced Wednesday its Forsyth County computer desktop plant would close by the end of January, putting 900 people out of work. The Legislature and local governments offered Texas-based Dell a deal worth up to $318 million in tax breaks and grants. Perdue said she would prefer that states stop incentives bidding wars but that tax breaks are necessary to bring in new jobs. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)

And Now

it's reported Dell will pay back a whopping $26,000,000 of the $300,000,000 granted it. Where's the Governor to lead the fight to get back "every red cent"? That's right, she's in China. Where should she be? Abroad leading new initiatives that may well lead to other incentive packages like this? Or here in NC, joining with Attorney General Cooper to get back "every red cent"? By the way, at the same time she might promote businesses here in NC. Oh well, it's only costing the taxpayers $77,000 for her Asian junket. Your tax dollars at work.

You are wrong about the

You are wrong about the incentives. NC never wrote them a check. They work like tax credits. See my other post in the article about Dell agreeing to pay the money back. Before you criticize someone about losing $274 million, you should know how these programs work. And the Governor has the attorneys working for her. That's their job. She can't personally do everything. By the way, I'm not a Perdue supporter - I voted for McCrory. But she didn't screw up anything about the incentives. They were granted under another administration. Dell didn't fulfill their obligations, and Perdue's attorneys held them to their end of the deal to pay beck the tax breaks given. Seems they were successful.
