WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation is celebrating with women who are fighting cancer and those who have survived.
The Holiday Inn Sunspree in Wrightsville Beach hosted hundreds of pink-clad people this afternoon. Proceeds from the luncheon go toward the Pink Ribbon Project. It's a way to show support and care for for women who are newly diagnosed with cancer.
"Until there's a cure, there's comfort," Pink Ribbon Project Chair Rochelle Myers said. "We provide comfort bags for women that are going through cancer treatment, and also we provide mammographies for uninsured and underinsured women."
Tracy brown was diagnosed with ovarian cancer on Christmas Eve last year. She finished her treatment in July.
"It showed me that the community cared, and that, you know, it was an outreach," she said. "You just need everything and all the support you can to go through this."
She says the pink ribbon bag and the genuine love has inspired her to get involved, raise awareness, appreciate everything and enjoy each day.
