Pleasure Island awash with flood waters

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- Historically, Lake Park Blvd. on Carolina Beach is one of the first roads to become impassable during torrential downpours. This week's rain certainly fits the bill for monumental flooding at the lake at Carolina Beach. Carolina Beach Lake has flooded before, and it will flood again, but this week's flood is definitely one of the worst.

"The worst one was when the water was in the shop, all the way in, up past the electrical outlets. That was the worst," Sue Ywaskevic, the owner of Unique Boutique on Lake Park Blvd. Said. "That was Hurricane Floyd, I believe, because they didn't drain the lake back then. That was the worst, but this is still pretty bad. It's the second worst."

For residents who haven't lived on Pleasure Island very long, this week of rain has been a wake-up call.

"I've only lived here two years, so this is my first storm since I've lived here, and it's starting to go up into our parking area, and I'm on stilts, so I'm certainly glad about that," Rebecca Smith said.

"I think it's a no-win situation," Wes Ywaskevic said. "(The town is) doing all they can. I mean it's a no-win. What are you going to do?"

Although it doesn't look like it, the Town of Carolina Beach has been pumping water out of the lake since Monday. Town Manager Tim Owens anticipates a state of normalcy by Friday night.

"Carolina Beach Lake is really a drainage area. There's about 500 acres that drains straight to the lake," Owens said. "When you have 20-plus inches of rain, all that water funnels down to one location with no place to go."

Owens said the town typically has an easier time managing stormwater during hurricanes because of the advance notice and quick exits.

"It's something else," Wes Ywaskevic said, "but I'll take this anytime over the snow though."
