Police take loaded gun from NC high school student

READ MORE:
CHARLOTTE -- Officials have seized a loaded .38-caliber pistol from a freshman at a Charlotte high school and charged the student with possessing a weapon on school grounds. The Charlotte Observer reported Thursday that the 17-year-old student had the gun loaded with three bullets in his book bag. Another bullet was found in his pocket. The gun was discovered about 11 a.m. Wednesday when someone called CrimeStoppers to report the weapon. School spokeswoman Cynthia Robbins said it was the first time this school year that a gun has been found at a school in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg County system. Students who bring guns to schools are generally expelled. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)

What is Wrong Here

A youth brings a loaded pistol to school. Has anyone not seen all of the school-rage shootings in our country the past few years? There should be posts of outrage on this site. It gets deeper. This is a 17 year old freshman. The vast majority of freshmen are 15 or 15 years old. Most 17 year olds are Juniors or Seniors. At this rate, if he can continue succesfully, he'll be a 21 or 22 year old Senior; an age at which most are graduating college; completing a tour of duty in the military; or entering their third or fourth year of work. Has anyone from the school board or social services been meeting with the Parents to determine why this youth was off the time table? Have there been other suspensions or expulsions? Rather than March on Raleigh and Washington to air a Century Old issue with no relevance in today's real world, perhaps the NAACP could march to Charlotte and help this wayward young man get on track before he becomes a convicted felon facing a life long prison sentence.
