Do you think officials should shut down Masonboro Island for the 4th of July?

acting like idiots

Masonboro on the Fourth

Masonboro.org is very concerned that this party will affect the rights of "the rest of us" who love Masonboro Island and visit it regularly with our families. However, masonboro.org is opposed to any additional regulations that restrict the use of Masonboro Island by law abiding citizens. Do we like the party and mess? NO, but we are willing to make sure that the island is restored to the same condition as it was on July 3rd. We are actively working on ways to support the efforts of law enforcement and the Coastal Reserve (manages Masonboro for the state) to lessen the impact this party has on Masonboro. If you are interested in joining our growing organization, please visit www.masonboro.org.

Thanks,

Jack

If the regulations were enforced with more agressive measures... we would not have half the problems we have today. If you are intoxicated, your boat is siezed, you pay the cost of having your boat towed, you pay a $1000 dollar fine and you go to jail, period. If you trash the beach,a minimum $500 dollar fine. You have to {unfortunately} make examples of a few in order to get the point across.

If this is just the actions of a few ...

... why didn't the rest of you put a stop to it or at least pick up some of the garbage? I'm sure you all brought garbage bags with you, right?

Doing nothing is also irresponsible.

If none of you can act responsibly, it's time to treat you like the children you are and shut it down for the 4th!

Masonboro on July 4th

How dare anyone think there is nothing being done. For many years I have brought trash bags and distributed them to encourage people to do the right thing. For 3 years, I joined forces with Masonboro.org and worked my self half to death cleaning up after these kids that come from all over and leave their trash. I have taken surveys, and talked until I am blue. It can be a dangerous job for a woman at times, but I have taken as much action as I can. I am getting older and therefore, took a break this past July 4th and enjoyed my friends for a change.
Yes, it does get crazy on the actual island of Masonboro, but not so on the other barrier islands. I do think the law enforcement does all they can considering the amount of young people that show up for the 4th. Anyone that makes statements like the one I am responding to really doesn't have a clue what is actually happening. Yes, these kids are irresponsible on that day, but it all gets cleaned up by very responsible volunteers who work very hard and get NO praise or thanks from the liberal groups or Coastal Reserve. They spew false press about making rules for the sake of the turtles. That is just not true. If they really wanted to help the turtles, they would take action to control the fox population. The foxes destroy and eat the turtle eggs and nests all year. The party people are there 1 main day. And, dogs do not cause any problems for the turtles either. I know for a fact that there are hundreds of foxes on these islands and they are even beginning to invade Carolina Beach in droves. Talk to some of the homeowners on the North end of CB, or even the sheriff to verify this...but you won't hear it on the news.
Also, I have been saying for years that the problem on July 4th does not come from the locals, but comes from kids that pay from $20 to $60 for a ride to the island on boats from folks just making money, and finally there was something in the news this year about that bad practice. Yeah! I have witnessed these transactions and seen the bad results of the kids being stranded. Of course they are going to leave their trash...they just want to get home! Sure it's irresponsible, but it's not my duty to do stop it. If I try to enforce law, then I am being vigilante and not responsible. So, before the person that wrote the original statements makes anymore "irresponsible" comments, do some real research...get out there and join MSB.org and help. Learn what is really going on instead of taking the easy 'point the finger' stand!
