DOT already looked at widening the "causeway". The current CF bridge is not suitable for it. It's too costly and supports won't handle the weight.
Please stay in Charlotte........
The solution isn't terribly difficult. Widen the causeway between the Cape Fear Bridge and Leland in both directions, 2 additonal lanes each side. During rush hours restrict traffic to 1 lane in and out, ie. hurricane exit route method. Of course this will save the taxpayer a billion dollars at least and cost a few select landowners millions, but it will work. FWIW the problem is with both know it all local yocals and crass Yankees, you should step aside and allow those of us from Charlotte show you how it can be done cost effectively. :)
...one of the bridges is broken, stuck, taken over for filming or otherwise unavailable.
There are already three bridges across the river. The problem is the bottleneck between Leland and Wilmington. The 6 lanes that come off of these bridges narrow to 2 lanes going towards Brunswick County. The I-140 bypass will help but the road between Leland and Wilmington needs to be widened before the traffic situation can improve.
This is not a necessary project. All they have to do is widend the small concrete bridges going in/out of brunswick and then add extra lanes. But I guess this is too simple. I live in Brunswick and work in Wilmington, so I know the frustration with traffic. However, I don't think you need to spend Billions of dollars and displace 100's of homeowners just to build a landmark. This project has dragged on for over 6 years now it time to put it to bed. The people of Stoney Creek and Snee Farm have had to endure the threat of the Government taking their homes for too long. Their property values have all but disappeared because of this stupid bridge. Try selling your home with an impending eminent domain issue hanging over you. All of those who are in favor of the bridge you need to move it to your neighborhood. I'll bet you will sing a different tune when its your house they want to take.
guest2013 u must b a YANKEE CAUSE U SURE DON'T KNOW WHAT THE HELL U TALKING ABOUT JUST TO WIDEN AND ADD LANES WOULD COST MORE THAN A WHOLE NEW BRIDGE IF ALL THE SO CALLED RETIRDED YANKS WOULD GO HOME AND GIVE US HOMEGROWN CAROLINIANS OUR ST BACK,WE WOULD'NT HAVE ALL THIS PROBLEM WITH THE TRAFFIC U COME HERE AND THINK U OWN THE HYWAYS SO YEA! IT WOULD B A HELL'VA LOT CHEAPER 4 ALL THE OUTSIDERS TO GO HOME
the cape fear bridge is not constructed properly. To widen it would be a mistake. The entire bridge needs to be up to safety codes
You plainly have never traveled into / out of northern Brunswick & New Hanover during rush hour, or spent several hours (on the way to work or worse, on the way home) waiting to cross after some fool has broken down on the bridge, or some accident has stopped traffic dead, or they've decided to work on the bridge, BECAUSE THERE ARE ONLY 2 LANES IN & 2 LANES OUT!!! It's time to fix this problem for all of the good, hard-working folks who travel to & from the two counties. If the Skyway will help, I am SO for it!
I just watched your newscast...watched your feature about the Cape Fear Skyway project at the cost of between 1 and 2 BILLION dollars and then your next news story was about all the funding cuts for our education...c'mon people!!! Let's get our priorities straight! Really!?!
We need it to take care of traffic, which is increasing all the time. They spent money on all other Cites in the state. Why not help us here in Wilmington.
The skyway bridge will not aleviate the traffic in wilmington/new hanover county. All it will do is line the pockets of our local politicians. I-140 by pass will be completed way before this Toll bridge
will ever be completed and that should reduce the wilmington traffic
and provide another route for traffic coming into new hanover county
