People in the know understand that the state basically no longer funds these places. The zoo in particular would not still be operating without the kind donations to the Zoo Society.

obviously you (valerie) are NOT "in the know"...The State COMPLETELY funds these places...read what the Zoo Director said..."who wants to buy a 'business' that loses $10 million dollars a year"...how do you think that these organizations have survived for so long?? DUH!! the state funds them and keeps them going
