Now THAT would be beneficial, and THAT would bring business to the coast and vice versa. But Castle Hayne to Wallace? Really?? Who would ride that train?!?

That would be great!! Make all modes of transportation/travel more competitive. Maybe USAir would give us peanuts again. HaHa. But seriously, I would love to see that and it WOULD bring more business here.

Railroads build railroads, since when does the government? Oh, yes the "so heavily subsidized otherwise it would go under" AMTRAC. Let the market make the call. The railroad would build it if the overwhelming amount of regulation, goverment fees and regulations and union labor didn't get in the way. Same reason we havent replaced any refineries in the US>

I agree. If there was a need for a railroad and it was profitable it would be built without big government; however,if the government is going to give out money one way or the other then I think our community should go after it. Why let that money go to other areas of state?
If we are looking into the future a rail transport for commuters and shipping may not be that bad of an idea. People still underestimate the contributions of Interstate I-40 and the improvements of Highway 17 and 74. Convenient access to Wilmington,Wrightsville Beach and even Myrtle Beach are going to continue to attract full time residents and influence growth in our area.

i think we do, for reasonable and efficient costs, since the price of oil aint getting any better, neither is traffic during the off peak hours, yes passenger died back in the early 60's due to interstate highways and cheap oil way under 99cents the way it is now big oil isnt getting any better since it's 2011. for 175million they have the money to get her done, that aint no money if they start another war with it..but it is a lot tf money if it's in ur pocket

I may VOTE yes
If the State of NC was not Broke, Commissioner Barfield.
The Dems answer is to find out many new ways to "SPEND", while admitting that the solution would not be immediate.
...Where's the money coming from?
Ahhhhhhh...
The highly desirable, Metropolitan, Wallace to Castle Hayne commute so many now desire to make.... by train, for; uhmmmm

Passenger rail died for a reason
Please point out a single light rail project in the country that sustains its maintenance and operation on fares alone.
Good luck. They are all money losers, draining tax dollars we can't afford to blow.
Plus, with I40 and the improvements on US 17 and 74/76 you mention, we don't NEED passenger rail.
