How much should NC State pay a Wilmington couple for the negligent death of their dog in its vets' care?

$28000 might be excessive,but$350 is not even close. If those are the only options,then the state should pay up.

If the courts begin giving awards such as this, the costs of veterinarian care will skyrocket. It's already expensive enough to give our pets the preventative care and treatments they need and deserve. Fewer and fewer pets will get this care if costs increase enough to cover the expense of the insurance that doctors will have to carry, and some clinics will simply disappear. Less care for the masses, because a few people can't accept the fact that their dog is dead!? Don't you realize that no matter what happens, you're going to outlive your dog!!!?
Further more, having worked in the pet care field for more than 20 years, i think putting any dog though a cancer treatment that debilitates it to the point of needing a feeding tube is cruel and inhumane. Dogs only live in the here and now. They don't and can't have hopes of better days to come; they can only live inside the misery we're willing to put them through for our own emotional (selfish) reasons. I'm not saying don't treat your pet for any illness that makes them feel bad, but think carefully about how much suffering your dog needs to go through to keep you from shedding a tear.

NC State should pay more than 28,000 but since the couple is asking for 28,000 then they should be awarded that plus any reasonable legal fees. Pet life is valuable. Humans are also part of the animal kingdom just like pets and once we respect pets then we can respect each other as humans. If veterinarians can kill pets then pediatricians can kill children. There needs to be more accountability in society; veterinarians are not above the law and should not be allowed to hide behind their licenses or affiliations with professional organizations.

I am a dog lover. I lost my last dog to a drugged-out teen with a rifle. I filed charges and he was found guilty. Yes, he had court costs and a criminal record. And a fine of $25.00. The judge determined that I had no monetary loss because my best friend was a mutt, and I had been given a replacement. (This of course did not include consideration or compensation of 7 years worth of medical care, vaccinations, taxes, food, etc.) You simply cannot put a value on a pet who may be your best friend, or your family. However, in a sense my dog was valued at $25.00. That is almost as ridiculous as what these people are asking for.

It's a dog not a person, so many times we seem to forget humans should come first.

I feel, all doctors (including Vets) are or should be insured to cover all accidental deaths due to their error. So, I feel, the couple should get more than the value of their family pet. Maybe not $28,000.00. $10,000.00 would be fair.
