The state is considering shutting down state parks during the winter to save money....

I think it depends on the location

Some parks I can see not being open. Honestly Grandfather Mtn doesnt need to be open in the winter. Its not honestly safe to be up there and travel to the park on the 2 lane roads in the winter time in the Mtns up there and with the wind blowing they constantly have to shut down the swinging bridge. But other parks I can see. The Zoo for example in Asheboro I dont see any need to close it because generally the animals have to be taken care of irregardless and the weather isnt necessarily an issue most times in the winter. The aquariums here on the coast at Fort Fisher and up in southern Outer banks region near Salter Path there is no reason for them to close either as they do get plenty of visitors in the wintertime because people still come down to get away from the colder weather in the central and western parts of the state. So ultimately I think it needs to be approached on a case by case basis depending on location and overall traffic volume to the location.

State Parks shut down for Winter

Leave them open, some people do like to go to the park occasionally, and they should be allowed to do so. The Park Rangers and clean-up crews need work also. Remember---Once you give up a peice of freedom--it usualy stays gone forever.

Saving $

If they are really serious about saving some of the State's money..you mean the TAX PAYERS money.. lets start with revisiting the State's Pay scale AT THE TOP! and the States spending habits. Let them run our budget like we have to do our home budgets.. I bet I could find a corner or two to cut and save that wouldn't directily impact the folks at the bottom.

state parks closing in winter

I think the state parks should stay open during the winter. It provides no cost recreation for the public. Personally off season is my favorite time to go.

Loretta, although a valid

Loretta, although a valid goal, these are not normal times. This state (and country) is in a HUGE budget hole and there just aren't many places left to cut. We all have to sacrifice EVERYthing not absolutely necessary until times (and tax revenues) pick up.

Typical politicians. When

Typical politicians. When they don't get their way, threaten the public with something that will "hurt" them.

Parks

They should stay open all year, Unless the county wants to shut down for 6 months in the winter. I would assume that we would not have to pay taxes for that 6 months. How does that work for you?
