Quite a few years ago, I lived in Oklahoma and a referendum was put on the ballot to vote for a lottery. The main reason for the lottery was to generate revenue for education. The referendum was approved and for the first year funds were sent to school districts to help with education cost. After a few years, the funds were reduced to be diverted to the general fund because the state needed the funds for other things. The funds were continually reduced to bare minimums and now teachers and parents have to buy supplies and supplement education to makeup for the reduced funds. You need to reject the tax increase. The funds will be there to start but they will go away and you will still have to pay higher taxes. The answer is for the state to cut entitlements and move the funds to education.
First of all let me say, I give teachers all the credit in the world. They are not only teachers, they are counselors, mentors, policemen, social workers and whatever else comes to mind. No, they do not get paid enough for what they do. With that being said, they choose the profession, not for money, but to make a difference. There are a few bad ones out there, but for the most part, teachers want to make a difference in the lives of our children. Personally for me, there is not enough Xanax or weapons available that would put me in a teaching position. Attitudes of the kids have changed remarkably over the years. Some of the them could do with a good butt whipping, but I digress.
Teaching is a 24 hour day basically. When I leave my workplace for the day, I take nothing home with me. A teacher takes home plenty of work (assignments, etc) that they have to catch up on. Let me say something here for a moment - some of this could be eliminated by reducing homework. Some of the homework sent home is nothing but busy work. Kids don't need 2-3 hours homework every day. What is being taught in class?
Our teachers deserve our respect and prayers. Their salaries should be commensurate with others based on experience and time put in.
How is there not enough money for education with an education lottery in place. We are taxed when we earn our money AND we are taxed when we spend our money. It's double jeopardy.AND we live under the duress of a hidden tax...The Inflation Tax.As more fiat currency is printed out of thin air..the percieved and literal value of a workers wages and purchasing power is undermined. So tacking ANOTHER tax on the working class will not remediate the problems created by the power elite class. IT ONLY COMPOUNDS THE PROBLEM.No new taxes please,i've had enough already. Bring back COMMON SENSE....Vote for Ron Paul in 2012 and win a free country!
A friend of mine lives in Tennessee where they pay NO state income taxes. Tenn. depends solely on sales taxes, which are just slightly higher than ours here in NC, for it's revenue. Not only that but we have much higher gasoline taxes in NC. Where is all this money going? Seems we have a lack of accountability and poor state fiscal management. The people of our state have been taxed and taxed again and it's time to stop. We need to say NO and find out where the money is going.
What happen to the lottery money for education? They just doubled the price of the tickets. Our state didn't pay back it's federal loan, so the federal goverment just raised our federal unemployment taxes from .6 to .9 percent for all business to pay. Why should I pay as a business owner for monies I didn't borrow. Figure that one out. And I bet alot of business owners don't know about this yet.
North Carolina in the Sixty came up with a 1 cent sale tax that was supose to be temp.it will stay.the gas tax is just about insane to put it enfect.people are looking for work, travlers are coming thur this state time.i'm anex overthe road truck driver,i wouldn't stop here or get aroom to slepp.virgina and south carolina is a cheaper place to fuel up and get a room or anything else .thank you Wayne
Bev Perdue created the lottery with the promise that it would only go to education. Bev Perdue re-allocated lottery money to the general fund. Bev Perdue made the cuts in education. Bev Perdue wants to increase taxes under guise of education.
Lottery Funds Continue To Be Diverted For Unauthorized Purposes
is 42% - - almost HALF of our students do not graduate from high school. And the posters here don't believe we need more $$$ in the NC Education System, one way or another? No wonder our State is viewed as being so backwards. See the stats for yourself at: http://boostup.org/en/facts/statistics
I can find no evidence of any correlation between spending more money per student and increased performance. The more likely connection is lack of parental involvement. Before the temporary tax expired, was performance better? No. Before the lottery was performance better? No. Money doesn't equate with increased performance. Perhaps money does buy more opportunity, but it's what is made of that opportunity that makes the difference, i.e., the age for legally dropping out should be increased and the punishments for kids and parents who choose not to take advantage of these tax-supported opportunities should be severely punished.
Constantly I hear about teachers needing more money. They work half of the year and sometimes less. School last exactly 180 days. The teachers go to school a week before it starts and a week after it's over. Add in about 4 to 8 teachers work days and maybe a workshop or two and a teacher works maybe 200 days. Then deduct the "sick" days they get, which they most ALL take 100% advantage of using, and you're back down to under 200 days a year. What other job do you know of that you can have off the whole entire summer, every holiday, every Saturday and Sunday, about 5 days for Thanksgiving, 2 weeks for Christmas, another week for spring break, snow days, hurricane days, etc. etc. etc? These teachers are already making an entire years' salary, complaining about it, and only working half of the year. Make them work in the summer too, tutoring these kids who are failing . What if you got sick and called 911 and they said, oh sorry, we're off for the summer? What if you went to the grocery store, and they said sorry, we're closed, our cashiers are off for spring break?Or you go to put your money in the bank and they are closed for 2 weeks for Christmas. I mean really, this is ridiculous. Teachers, if you stop and think that your salary is for a half of a year of work, your'e not doing bad , seriously.
Show me someone who thinks teachers get paid for working a half a year and I'll show you an uneducated idiot. I'll let teachers defend themselves, if they have time in their schedules, but your thinking is incredibly flawed. When teachers "work" for 180 school days, they also are working during scheduled work days before, during, and after the school year. A teacher who works an 8 hour day doesn't exist. (Do you take home work from your job EVERY night and EVERY weekend, and EVERY holiday? My presumption is NO!) Do you have to use your time off to continue your education? Do you have to pay from your pocket for this education? Unless a teacher elects to have their pay spread throughout the year, they aren't earning money during the Summer, and yet they are paying to attend college, seminars, etc., to stay certified, and up-to-date to be their most effective in the classroom. Do you have to buy your own work tools and supplies out of your salary? Most likely not, unless you may be a plumber or electrician, who I might add get paid nearly $100.00 an hour and only work a 40 hour work week.
So, would paying a higher salary produce a better teacher? No teacher has ever entered the classroom for the money. An increase MIGHT help retain qualified, quality, experienced educators, but overall, throwing money into education will not improve education. There is not an extreme problem with education. The problem instead is with what people choose to do with the opportunities education provides. Where is student respect? (They don't even follow the laws). Where is parental support? (Too many parents want nothing more than baby-sitting, and substitute parenting).
Where is the outrage? No doubt the teachers and those who are serious about education are much too busy to have time to counter your pathetic, ignorant whining.
For one, there is no law which requires a teacher to take money out of their own pocket to buy school supplies. This is done so at their own will. Also, a teacher does not even work an entire work day at school most of the time. In elementary a teacher does not go to lunch with their class,so this gives them a free hour, then the students go to physical education, music, or art each day, which gives the teacher an additional hour of "catch up" time. In middle and high schools a teacher usually has only 2-3 classes a day out of 4 total. Now don't go and freak out on me, i'm sure there are a few teachers who have 4 classes. I'm not saying a teacher doesn't deserve the salary they get, I'm saying it's a decent salary for a half a years worth of work. If they are making 30,000, that's not bad for half a year. If they are making 50,000, that would be 100,000 if they worked the whole year. And YES YES YES YES YES, 100% most definitely yes at the question as to whether other jobs require " homework" on weekends, holidays, etc. You are fooling yourself in thinking that teaching is the only job that is " take home". Also, grow up and stop referring to other human beings as " idiots". It's not very becoming of you. Thanks.
Yes its true that teachers get the summers off, but do you think its right for a peron who has went to school for 4 years and earned a degree to train and mold out childern should make more that 20,000 a year. NC Teacher only get half the pay as other states. Its wrong, what happened to the Education Lottery
You idiot liberal socialist supporters keep voting the same 'ol democratic tax and spend people in over and over and over. HOW'S THAT WORKING OUT FOR YOU!?
I thought the NC education Lottery was supposed to take care of education expenses
OK so where is all the lottery money going ?????
Has anyone benefitted from the so called Lottery money. Where is all the money going and how is it accounted for? It certainly isnt going to the schools, I sure havent seen a decrease in folks buying lottery tickets.
So Where's the Beef?
This is a terrible idea. Perdue is totally out of touch with NC residents and the state of our economy. We already have an "education" lottery. How about cutting some of the waste out of our education system.
I think we need to get her out of office and also maybe she makes enough money to pay this extra taxes we want to collect, she needs to quit digging in our empty pockets and draw some of our money she already has out of her bank account ,she can give as much as she wants of our money she already has,the people of North Carolina dont need her to spend our money we have bills of our own to pay The state and feds get way to much of our money now, they keep on the american people need to all just quit working stop paying taxes,we gonna end up losing what we have anyway by the time they get through taxing they already get 35% of our pay soon it will be 50% ,60% we will work to pay taxes, and when we get old enough to collect some of what we paid in ,there want be nothing between payin for the government to steel from us and paying for all the illegals, drug addicts, criminals,to be on disability and medicade and them living better than us selling the pills we payed for for them , this while we can't even afford to go to the doctor,My God what is this Country coming to.This Country was built by GOD and we need to put it back in GODS HANDS,and Get all the Politicians out.God tells us we have to pay taxes but he don't say we have to work and give them all of it for taxes,we the people of the Good Ole USA need to take back our Country
Most democrats love just about any tax. Next thing you know they will take the ceiling of the gas tax and make it the floor. Oh, wait, skip that. I know, they will tax the gas tax money and use it for roads. Oh, wait, skip that as well. Maybe they will take the money earmarked for education and use it to hire teachers. Oh, wait, skip that one also.
They have proven they can't responsibly handle the money they currently take, sure thing, take some more.
I disagree with labeling and partisanship. No one wants to pay more taxes. Both mainstream parties in Congress are engaged in an honest portrayal of their true absence of character. That is to do nothing for the American people, and to steal from America vis-a-vis insider trading and promoting their own wealth over the good of the country. Democratic Governor Bev Perdue and Congressman John Baynor say they have different ideologies and serve in different offices, but act the same way, tax and spend and whine about the other party. Politicians have created their own rules and guess what....the rules always favor them when challenged from us have-not little people. Prime example....the representation that the "education lottery" which is not really gambling because gambling is technically illegal, nonetheless will serve to ensure EDUCATION and nothing else. Isn't that why it's called the EDUCATION LOTTERY? Now we need to increase sales tax to SAVE education. Hogwash, Lies and more Lies. Republicians, Democrats and Republicrats. I'm voting for Ron Paul who will be forced to split the ticket, but he will win. Wanna bet $10,000.00 Mitt?
Seldom has a politician been so out of touch with reality!
Gov. Perdue is in LaLa Land if she thinks her tax ideas are good for North Carolina. We just got rid of a "temporary tax" and now she is wanting another. We all know it won't go for education, at least the lions share won't. She raided the education lottery funds when she firt went into office and has proven over and over her decisions are a "tit for tat" against the Republicans. Not what is best for our state. I agree with a previous comment, vote for the individual not the party, and pray they do what they say when running once they get in office. She must GO with Obama for North Carolina to survive.
The poll mirrors her re-election bid...a lost cause. One of the remaining remnants of a corrupt regime that has been in place for too many years. The taxpayers are tapped out in this state.Nice try at a re-election ploy for a desperate Governor.Playing the education card is one of the few options left in her bag of tricks. You rode into office on Obama's coat tail and that is the way you two will leave.
...but it's not going to be a cake-walk. She will carry the minority vote simply because she has a D behind her name. The same goes for the LGBT community. She will also carry most teachers and anyone whose career is linked to edication in even the loosest of connections.
Worst of all, she will likely carry most urban counties simply because we have an ever increasing population of left-wing liberal nutjobs in Raleigh, Durham, Greenville, Asheville, and even here in Wilmington. Like her, they never met a tax they didn't love. (They feel guilty about having money left over at the end of the month.)
The biggest danger, however, is the grass roots conservative voters not even bothering to vote, as we saw in November of 2011. No political movement can survive in fits and starts, active only when the mood strikes them. Of course, this is a big year with the anticipated goal of ejecting Comrade Obama from the White House. However, let Romney get the nomination and then have him start flailing and refusing to attack Obama, as McCain did, and ol' Bev will be back for four more years.
The highest gas tax in the NATION, liquor tax, tabacco tax, etc....Seriously?? Tax us MORE?? Why is it called the Education Lottery if the money isn't going to education? Why should we have to pay more taxes to fund more education when that money won't end up in education anyway? I seriously cannot believe this is even being considered....North Carolina has the highest tax rate in the region on almost everything. I certainly think it's time we take a stand...VOTE, VOTE, VOTE and let's get all these jokers out of office and if the new ones don't get things done, vote them out and bring in someone else. Eventually our message will be heard!
i aggree with you but you cant get everyone to stand together.
I don't drink or smoke. I live close enough to the SC border that I can quickly run down and fill up the tank. And since NC mishandles the lottery money, on the occasion that I do get a lottery ticket, I also buy those in SC. Not only are the taxes in this state ridiculous, it has to be a hardship on the businesses close to the state lines because I am not the only one who saves money by crossing the border.
As for the voting, people need to quit voting party and need to start voting individual. They need to vote according to what is best for our government. And I can tell you right now that Perdue has to go if we are ever to have a chance of making it. Of course her predecessor wasn't any better. I hope that her successor is.
