Thom Goolsby makes me ashamed to be a Republican. He is a fake conservative and a fake American. Conservatism is CONSERVING the rights of all citizens. He is not fit to serve me in the General Assembly, and he is not fit to serve meals at McDonalds.
Unfortunately, Sen. Goolsby was evidently not brought up in North Carolina. Otherwise, he would know not to ridicule others gratuitously. He should be reading Miss Manners in a remedial course, since his education has been so lacking.
The man is SUPPOSED to represent all the people in his district. He doesn't. He is supposed to listen to his constituents and do what they want. He doesn't. He instead insults the fine folks who have a different opinion than him. There is only way to get him to reflect on what it means to be an elected representative. Vote him out!
It simply is not a civil way to deal with your voters and opposition. He is trying to rile up the people in the community who respond to this kind of rhetorical washing of the issues in order to distract from the substance at hand. These people are exercising their right to free speech, and have some valid points of concern for people on both of the sides of the aisle actually.
Of course i am interested to see how many people who way he is "right on" actually know what proposed laws are being protested rather just parroting talk radio sensationalism about the "liberal left" without actually understanding the issues at hand.
As for the degeneration of the previous comment, no one actually equated his views in any racial context. This is again being used as a rhetorical foil to categorize any valid historical parallel as a racial claim simply because it had a racial element in order to "invalidate" it, rather then seeing the parallel as one separate from a racial issue if it is present. Referencing the KKK and NCAAP as similarly motivated groups may have been accurate in reference to their extremism in the 1950s and 60s, The paramount difference is one represented the power of the status quo and the other the oppressed minority. Since that time one has become an extremist fringe movement, and which one has evolved into a socially broad advocacy group. The original comment was about the exercise of social power, whether or not it was based on a racial motivation.
The entire danger of this kind of article written by a senator is that is appeals to our lowest motivations, divides us and distracts from a conversation about the substance of the issues. It is evasive at least, and incompetent at worst.
Keep up the good work Thom. Calling it like it is something missing in Government these days. Intimidation is a tool used by bullies, but it is bullying none the less. Stay strong.
Are you one of his kin? If so, you are as warped as he is.
You are tool, nonetheless.
I have read up and down the comment page and am in complete shock! We are up in arms on either side of this issue and are slinging insults at each other. For example, "idiot", "liberal loonies" and others. This is simply uncalled for and have we become so divided that we must use baseless name-calling to stick up for our side of the issue? Have we become so divided that we must hurl insults at each other like we did when we played in grade school? It was my understanding that we have evolved from this behavior. Lately though, it has become our only means of communication. How can we teach our children to have character, not bully each other and not sling insults at each other when we, the adults, do that on websites and television?
I am ashamed of us all. This moment in American history has been blotted. We MUST be mindful of our words because if there is to be a better history in the future our children need to learn how to respect each other, compromise with integrity and see all sides of every issue and not become bogged down by rhetoric.
How can anyone defend a person who calls other people "morons?" It is arrogant, mean-spirited and trashy. What comes out of a person's mouth is their best example of character. Just because the people disagree with him doesn't mean he has to be so ugly - bring out the issue, discuss them, defend the NCGA action - but don't make light of a constitutional right or those who elect to exercise it. As an attorney, he should be in defense of those rights; as an elected official - it's his JOB for which those "morons" pay him. 2014 will prove how delusional this guy really is.
While Goolsby may get a low score for tact, he is right and is entitled to his opinion. He is one of the few that is standing up to the bullying of these groups (similar to the same bullying tactics used in Wisconsin).
Moocher Monday would be more accurate.
Yeah, because standing up for your rights and excercising your right to freedom of speech to state that what your government is doing is morally ethically and morally wrong is “mouching”…
Where’s the “mouching” come into play here? Maybe you don’t undestand the Constitution and the rights of people to assemble.
More than likely…..
To viciously ridicule & demean constituents who are sincerely & peaceably expressing their viewpoints & concerns is totally out of line & unworthy of anyone in public office. Goolsby should respectfully apologize & then meet with those who he needs to listen to so he can understand their concerns & why they feel they need to peacefully protest & even be arrested If he is not capable of showing that respect he should resign.
Dump and imprison White- he has lied and bullied others- now his time is coming. Wilmington will be clean when we recognize White, dawson and their pimp Price for the norons they are
Right on!!! Right on!!!!
Whether you are right or wrong in what you said, to me is beside the point. A Christian would have said it in far less a demeaning manner. Senator Goolsby, if you're so much for ALL of North Carolinians as you seem to project in your several commercial spots then stop acting like the rest of both the left and right in Raleigh and Washington and act like a Human Being! Making such demeaning comments as you did in your column is beneath you! You can simply state your case without the name calling and stereotyping. I hate to acknowledge I go to the same church as you! Do better! I know I deserve it....
Carry on the good work Senator. These Liberal loonies need to be taken down a notch. You can't feed a child candy for a long while and then take it away from them. This group acts like a bunch of spoiled brats.
The leaders of the naacp in NC keep this up to keep the jobs they have. If they can stir the pot it seems they suck in the left more and more..There is no money, there is no bank, there is no pot of gold. The money is not there I for one will not drink the kool Aid of the Reverend Barber.
I think Goolsby is the idiot..he calls us idiots...he is the worst senator I have ever known since when I was a youth, we had a representative that hardly knew his name as he was so old and infirm. Goolsby's problem is about what he believes (disgusting) and he constantly spouts off his dirty mouth about those things.
Wish more politicians would speak up like him! These special interest groups are out of control. Keep on keeping on!!
...he's not a "PC" type of guy, neither am I. Some things just need to be said as they exist without a sugar coating. This is one of them.
If your feelings get hurt, move on to the next article and grab a box of kleenex.
The KKK isn't a PC group of people either, but I certainly wouldn't want to be associated with representing their narrow and hateful point of view.
The NAACP and the KKK have more in common than you know. They both have the same core beliefs and try to achieve the same goals. They were made for each other.
Racially devisive comments like yours really make me shake my head and they defy any sense of reasonability. The Senator simply made some honest and true comments about these NAACP protesters and you attempt to compare that with the behavior of the KKK? Really now? I almost can't believe you even wrote a comment like that.
I'm going to explain something very basic here. With that kind of closed minded attitude and racial mindset, it's people like you that seem to WANT to perpetuate racial devision. Along with the archaic tactics used by the NAACP to gain attention from the public and media, you are actually displaying supreme ignorance, anger and are setting your people back many decades.
The basic purpose is for us all to get along and be productive as a society. Staging protests that get you arrested, gain you negative attention and cause you to appear as a clan of ignorant buffoons without a real purpose, goal or initiative is fully counter-productive. I don't know if it is the lack of education, a big chip on your shoulder or feel that you are owed something you haven't worked for. What ever your problem is, you need to get a handle on it and move forward. What you're doing isn't working.
Thank you "Guest-o-matic" for addressing this incredible comparison in an intelligent & patient manner, as I am afraid I could not show the restraint you did!
Change where you have KKK and put in NAACP and you will see it fits.
A person seems not to be able to have a view point different from a Liberal without being labled a racist. This old shoe is getting to be tiresome.
Always remember, When a liberal calls you a racist, you need to rejoice. It means you have won the debate/argument. They cannot argue facts so they start the name-calling.
..and it's starting to smell. He didn't have the cajones to put it in the paper here in his hometown...come on, karma train..he was just pretending to be 'hip' at a yoga event at uncw a couple of days ago..
