New Hanover County commissioners could be facing an 11 to 14 million dollar deficit in the next budget.
Last week, they asked school administrators to look into options for shaving 2 million dollars out of their budget.
This week, they upped that number to a potential 4 million dollar budget cut.
New Hanover County Superintendent Dr. Al Lerch held a closed door work session today to discuss what programs and areas they would cut back, if necessary.
"We're getting into a question of what makes New Hanover County schools, New Hanover County schools," said Dr. Lerch. "85% of our budget is actually personnel and I figure that this 2 million dollar request would affect about 100 people."
We want to emphasize, these cuts are not a sure thing.
County and school officials are just looking at different scenarios at this moment.

Budget cuts
I know of one way that might possibly help; don't bus kids. That will save money.
Schools
So North Carolina approves and 'Education Lottery' and now we're broker than ever? Where is all that lottery money going? I don't get it!
But How Can This Be?
Our "Education" Governor was in Washington this week beating the drum for Federal Funds.
Of course she was only there for one day while in Hollywood for 3 Days.
Does that mean she transitioned herself from an "Education" Governor to a "Hollywood" Governor?
They are cutting the wrong things
I am outrage with this school cutting. The money has always been a problem. But, it isn't the money it is who is handling it. The state receives money from the state and federal government for every child with a IEP (individual Education plan) over $4000 each child and 98% of that money goes towards salaries to help educate the kids,, The money is there. I encourage each parent to look into this. I did back in 2005 and found this information right from the board of education.I am tired of school boards that don't have kids in the school system making the choices of what is and isn't cut. It is hard enough fighting day to day for services and basics things to be taught in school. I have a child in Pender county that has special needs and it is hard enough to get things for him in school. We can't let the schools go down. It is the way of the world for our young people. Please parents ask the question stand up and fight for this.
Money
I believe it is 6000 per kid. Also, above that they get busing, building and hot luch money for each child. The problem is there is not oversite. They let the buildings run down and then they want to build new ones. You have more Chiefs than Indians and the Chiefs have to make big salaries, only because they are Chiefs.
Teachers are always under paid and over worked. No overtime because the state has found a way to say they are Salary Employees. But you get what you vote for... I can't beleive the same people are voted back in year after year..
