WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Practice has started at UNC Wilmington for the women's basketball team. The men's team still has a full week and a half to wait. When the women's practice ended Wednesday evening WWAY's John Rendleman talked with head coach Cynthia Cooper-Dyke about the team's first official practice and the absence of guard Julia Finlay and assistant coach Johnetta Hayes.

Assistant coach Johnetta Hayes supervised a UNCW women's basketball individual workout drill two weeks ago. At that workout drill UNCW guard Julia Finlay was ordered to logroll for 30 minutes. The drill resulted in disciplinary action being taken against Johnetta Hayes. Kelly Mehrtens, who at the time was the director of athletics for UNCW released the following statement on September 22nd:

"Dr. Sue Combs, our faculty athletics representative, and I have spent many hours today gathering additional information about the incident that occurred following Monday’s practice by the women’s basketball team. As mentioned previously, the drill in question will not be tolerated and will never happen again in our program.

The issue has been addressed with the employee and appropriate disciplinary action has been taken. Due to university policy and state law, I am unable to comment further.

Once again, we are very sorry that this happened. Coach Cooper-Dyke remains committed to having our program represent UNCW and the community in the best possible way, and we ask for your continued support of our student-athletes and teams." Kelly Mehrtens, UNCW AD
