WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Celebrating a heritage. Presbyterians got together today to celebrate their Scottish roots. It's called the Kirking of the Tartan - and it happened at First Presbyterian Church on 3rd Street.
A tartan is a flag that represents a family. Today was a chance to reflect on the Scottish heritage of Presbyterians and how that heritage has influenced both the church and the nation as a whole.
"Church members enjoy it and we look forward to it each year and the Scottish society in town participate as well so we get a lot of visitors and community folks as well," said First Presbyterian Pastor Ernie Thompson.
Kirking of the Tartan happens this time every year at First Presbyterian

The Scottish Church Service on October 31, 2010 at the First Presbyterian Church marked the 20th Anniversary of the service at this local church. About 40 families were represented in the processional carrying their tartan banner to identify the individual families. All are encouraged to mark their calendar for next year's service.
