Proposed Titan moratorium takes another hit in Raleigh

The effort to put the brakes on a cement plant in Castle Hayne took another big hit in Raleigh Thursday. As the Senate was about to vote on Julia Boseman's proposed moratorium until September 2010 on permitting and building cement plants, Majority Leader Tony Rand removed it from the calendar and kicked it back to the Appropriations Committee. That means it would have to be tied into appropriations or budget discussions to be considered again and move onto the House. Sources tell WWAY the chances of that happening are very slim.

Titan Cement Plant

I think the citizens who defend Titan Cement Plant are wearing blinders. 80% of cement plants have had violations over the past five years. Titan has had violations in their VA and Florida plants and a judge has ordered their FLorida Plant closed due to evidence of carcinogens released into drinking water. The supposed 160 jobs are not worth the money it will cost to battle the consequences. Over 200 area physicians oppose this plant. Tourists are horrified to hear that there is a plant proposed so close to a river and over an aquifier. People who defend Titan Cement seem to not really think ahead to what it will mean to their children. We have a chance to stop this but we need help. I spoke with a gentleman yesterday who had worked in the cement industry. He was visiting the area for the first time and he kept saying, "Don't let them tell you it won't hurt the area. Don't believe it. I've had friends die because of the respiratory problems caused by the plant." He was visibly angry and shaken by the possibility that a plant would be built here so close to the water.

Yes we need jobs, but DO YOU live in the area of this new industry about to open? No you don't but I DO! and I for one would like to breathe clean air and not noxious fumes. this may make some of you mad, but I don't care. GO AWAY TITAN!

i am so glad of this result. i really think that julia boseman needs to stop trying to block titan cement from coming in here! brunswick co, new hanover co, pender co, and columbus co are in DESPRATE need of these jobs. why cant everyone that is fighting titan, just stop and listen?? and everyone that is fighting titan, have jobs. please stop fighting.

Very Nice

I believe all the talk and fight againist Titan Cement is just wrong. This company will be revamping an ole cement plant on that site with all new technology and stricter regs that are in place. I'm just ashamed to see all the fight againist jobs to be created in a time that Jobs are going away and this area could use a boost. So please send a message to the world and say that Southeastern NC is open to industry and new jobs.

Great News

That is great news for the Wilmington area. We need the jobs...
